WALPOLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SOCIAL STUDIES
GRADES 6-8

Curriculum Summary by Grade

These curriculum summaries have been developed by teachers and administrators to serve as another way of communicating with parents. They highlight the core curriculum and expectations for student learning at each grade level.

The curriculum summaries describe what most students at a grade level are expected to know and be able to do by the end of the school year. They also reflect the goals of the various Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. It is important to note that although children may learn and grow at different rates and through varied styles, all should make regular progress.

While we have high expectations for all students and encourage each student to work to their capacity, parents and teachers recognize that some students have more difficulty in school. Others will progress more rapidly and move well beyond these core expectations. It is the joint responsibility of school and home to provide support, challenge, and encouragement for all students.

Grade 6 - World Geography and Ancient Civilizations I

In sixth grade World Geography and Ancient Civilization I, students will explore how geography impacts where and how people live across the globe. Areas of focus will include the purpose and importance of the different areas of study that make up the social sciences.  Students will learn about the evolution and development of “Early Man,” as well as the contributions and lasting impact of  major civilizations throughout Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Grade 7 - World Geography and Ancient Civilizations II

The seventh grade, students will learn about ancient civilizations in Asia and Europe.  Students will focus on how geography has impacted societies and people throughout history and in the modern world. We also will survey the major political and cultural developments in those ancient civilizations. Some of the civilizations we focus on are Ancient China, Ancient India, Classical Greece, and Classical Rome.  We will highlight how connections between civilizations have influenced the development of both and how ancient European civilizations have shaped our political thought.

Grade 8 - United States and Massachusetts Government & Civic Life

The objectives of the 8th grade Social Studies curriculum are: for students to understand the federal system of government in the U.S. and how government operates at the national, state, and local levels with a focus on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; to understand the role which the Supreme Court has played in U.S. history through the investigation of specific Supreme Court cases; to develop a sense of the importance of individual Civic Participation and engagement through “Civics-in-Action” projects; and to appreciate the ongoing struggle in the U.S. to realize the ideal of “Liberty and Justice for All”, with a focus on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s.
