Formal personal correspondence basically means letters that you, yourself, write to people who are not personal friends of your's, and who are instead generally part of businesses and organisations.
Examples of these types of correspondence (letters) could be:
a cover letter for a job or training application
complaint (service or product)
request for service, product, or information.
These letters could be sent via an email, or you may print them out, sign them and send them in an envelope with a stamp on.
In your life, these types of letters will help you get a job (cover letters), advocate (stick up) for your family, and find out information. It is really important that you know how to explain yourself confidently in a written format so that no body can take advantage of you.
These letters have three main components:
Format - what it looks like on the page
Content and tone - what is said and how it is said
Editing - is your spelling and punctuation correct?

You do it by:

Ensure that:
You have used an appropriate format and the purpose is clear.
Your vocabulary and tone are appropriate to the purpose and audience.
You are clear in your meaning, all information is relevant, and ordered in a sequence appropriate to the context.
