U.P. Boys Basketball Interviews by Allison Bolanos
New Years Bash
01/26/24, Caleb Frederick
On January 26th ASB hosted they're very first event of the new year, NEW YEARS BASH at University Preparatory School. This event was in place of there usual event Fall Fest which was canceled and replaced with the New years bash. The New years bash had plenty of clubs selling food and drinks to everyone who purchased a ticket. ASB was also there as the DJ's playing music the entire night. Student were allowed to buy tickets for 1 dollar each to purchase food, toys, desserts, and drinks from the clubs to enjoy while they spend time with friends and family. This allows clubs to make money to host even more events for the school and the club itself. The campus seemed to be full of students from the school and kids from others as well as Moms, Dads, and siblings. Plenty of people rushed to the dance floor to dance with their friends and have fun.
There were multiple students who really enjoyed the event like Atasha Torres who stated "I actually really enjoyed the event and the food provided, hanging out with my friends made a big difference on how much fun I had." Tons of students showed up and supported the clubs selling food, Anthony Ludenga who worked the Mock Trial stand said "we pretty much sold out all of our supplies and made tons of money because of it." This function was great for club members and students alike.
Sweet Success: A Seniors Acceptance
01/27/24, Joanna Vance
Its the time of the year again when high school seniors wait for the arrival of an envelope or an email that holds the answer to their future. These seniors at University Preparatory gather around to share their accomplishments and promise an exciting new chapter. Let's take a look at one of our Seniors!
Garvita , Grade 12, is majoring in "Public Health" and has recently recieved an acceptance letter from California Baptist University. Along with CBU, Garvita also applied to CSUSB and MSMU, though her final decision on which one to go to is still awaiting as it can be hard to choose where to spend your time at. Garvita stated that when she got her welcome box, she was really excited and filled with joy. Her friends and her family were all proud of her and made sure to support her in whichever college she chooses. Garvita is ready for whatever comes her way during this time and will make sure to make the most of it. "I love my friends here, but I think it is time to leave to college and explore more of the outside world".
Great Job Garvita on all of your acceptances. We're all very proud of you and wish you the very best!
Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Yessika
01/29/24, Amerie Telon
Say hello to Mrs. Yesskia! If you didn't know she is our beloved school librarian. She loves watching movies. One of Mrs.Yessikas favorite movie is My life, the movie seems like a real tear jerkier from how she described it. If you have any free time watch it. Mrs.Yesskia is also a sports fan, she loves attending our schools basketball games, along with The Lakers. Soccer wise she enjoys keeping up with Real Madrid and LA FC.
Mrs.Yessika answered a very touchy topic. Who are her favorite students? She didn't answer the question fully but she gave us a class. She said Class of 2026. Along with her son being in the class of 2026 she said this because most of the kids went to her sons old school. All of those kids she has mostly known since they where about 5 so sometimes she feels like they are her own kids. Mrs.Yessika Said "Yes I love having my own space in the library and I love how I get to know all of you"
All kids can come and check books out after school, before school, or B-lunch she is her from 8 until 4.
New Clubs!!! 01/27/24, Joseline Tanchez
As the new starts semester for 2024, we are welcomed with many new additions to our school activities that we haven't seen before. Various of these new additons comes from new clubs that were created after the chance to get needed publicity from the club advertisements we see at the start of the year in the gym. As a result of this, the newer clubs have smaller groups and not many are aware that these groups even exist. One of these new clubs is a club similar to Krush but instead of Korean pop, it is more directed towards Hip Hop. This club had its first meeting on January 22nd, 2024 and meets on mondays after school in P-201.This means that any students that are interested in joining are still welcome to join to expand the size of its members.
The club is relatively simple and care-free, it focuses mainly on the energetic movements that is Hip Hop. Its a very interactive club where the members are allowed to suggest songs and dances, as long as they contain no innapropriate contents. Since it is a newer club, it is not likely that it will be involved in any school performances, so if you're looking for a fun club to hangout at, this is one to go check out.
This club was founded by Isabella Kuo, she is the club's president. She has prior experience with teams, as she is also a huge part of color guard and has participated in club performances like Krush. She is a wonderful person to lead to the club under everything she has learned.
Although movement dance club is still building up its foundations as a new club, hip hop dances are very different from the dance clubs we have at the moment. Its unique to ones we've had for a while and its definitely worth checking out to see if the type of club it is, is good for a passtime afterschool.
From Cadets to Leaders: Conversations that Inspire at University Preparatory 01/26/24, Bryanna Villalpando
In the heart of the Victor Valley Union High School District, University Preparatory stands as a nurturing ground for future leaders. The California Cadet Corps (CCC) at University Preparatory plays a pivotal role in this transformative journey, going beyond conventional classroom boundaries. Let's explore the unique experiences and curriculum that define the CCC at University Preparatory.
A Holistic Approach to Education
Beyond the typical high school curriculum, the CCC at University Preparatory introduces a comprehensive education model. The six core subjects - Citizenship, Patriotism, Academic Excellence, Basic Military Knowledge, Health, Fitness, and Wellness, and Leadership - form the foundation of a holistic learning experience.
Citizenship: Unveiling California's Rich Tapestry
In Citizenship classes, cadets delve into the unique facets of California. From the state's geography to understanding potential natural disasters, the curriculum instills a sense of responsibility and awareness about their surroundings.
Academic Excellence: A Gateway to Future Success
More than a commitment to academic success, the CCC propels cadets towards higher education. The program fosters a culture of intellectual excellence, encouraging students to pursue knowledge beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.
Basic Military Knowledge: Understanding Without Pressure
In Basic Military Knowledge classes, cadets explore the fundamentals of the military, demystifying its purpose and structure. Military courtesies are taught without pressure to enlist, offering a balanced perspective on the armed forces.
Leadership: Crafting Personal Philosophies
At the heart of the CCC is the emphasis on leadership. From foundational skills to advanced theories, cadets are encouraged to craft their own leadership philosophies. It's not just about holding a title but embodying a mindset that inspires positive change.
Promotion Process and Dynamic Events
The rank structure, promotion process, and a series of events like X-treme Team Challenge, Drill Competition, and Leadership School contribute to a rich and dynamic cadet experience. These elements ensure that cadets are not just learning in the classroom but actively engaging in hands-on experiences.
Conversations that Inspire Growth
In this transformative journey, the CCC at University Preparatory becomes a space for conversations that inspire growth, resilience, and a sense of purpose. It's more than a class; it's a community where leadership is not just taught but lived. As "From Cadets to Leaders: Conversations that Inspire" unfolds at University Preparatory, it's evident that the CCC is a catalyst for change. Cadets emerge not just as students but as inspired leaders ready to leave their mark on the world.
University Prep 7th Grade Science Fair
01/28/24, Joseline Tanchez & Victor Eamphanich
On January 24th, 2024, 7th grade Science students from Mrs. Price's class were to prepare a project of a researched scientific question, each of the student provided evidence supporting the claim they made. A board displaying the statistics and additional information that were made and decorated by each student which was turned in as a project grade. The boards that were eligiable to be judged as part of the science fair were placed inside the cafeteria and were reviewed during highschool B lunch.
Students conducted research about their topics and submitted papers with their board that went into a deep description of their project. The papers were of the research they had conducted and presented on their boards, the boards displayed in the cafeteria were displayed beautifully and some even corresponded to their topic of research. Some of the boards displayed, but what were the requirements?
The science project itself had to have a hypothesis which was studied down to the variables. To accompany this, the student researchers had to explain their data and state their background research in a science journal and their final papers, though, nothing could be hand written. As a result of the type of project the student had done, there was additional requirements, such as, an engineering project which is preferred to have a physical demonstration. The final thing is the display, it had to be eye catching and attractive in its appearance. Each project displayed in the science fair did a phenomenal job under these requirements such as the following images demonstrates:
Though only a select few of projects made it in to be judged, each student that prepared a presentation put much of their time and effort into the final product. Each project that was selected to be judge is certain to receive proper recognition for the efforts each student who put into their displays. A majority of students that enjoy subjects such as these would be delighted to experience another experience just like this one.
Student Spotlight: Angelina Akram 01/27/24 Victor Eamphanich
Angelina Akram is a very hardworking student that takes care of a lot of work for Freshmans that goes unnoticed. She is a hardworking student that helps others by volunteering. Not only this, but she takes care of work for clubs and the class of 2027. She is an amazing student that was rewarded with the title of President of Class of 2027.
One of her recent acts; Angelina volunteered for 5 shifts for New's Years Bash the shifts were for Class of 2027 for 4:00- 4:30, Tutoring Club 4:30-5:00, Coptic Club 5:00-5:30, Class of 2027 6:00-6:30 and for ASB 6:30-7:00.
"I was able to make the last of the esquites knowing that we had used all put so much effort into this and wer were all able to use all of the supplies that we had"(Angelina's Favorite part of volunteering)
During Angelina's 'break' from 5:30 to 6:00 she didn't have a shift and she was still able to help out and grab more supplies and lend an extra hand with the club necessities. Some others Angelina did during her 'break' was Cha-Cha Slide with her clubs while doing the shifts and singing the whole time, she was able to run around with Mr. Salazar's son to advertise equites with a poster."I had a good time," (Angelina Akram)
One of the shifts that Angelina volunteered for was Class of 2027 which she says "In my opinion I think Class of 2027 sold the best because the equites is a popular item along the face that we had great publicity and in the process we made nice big cups filled with all you could ask for"(Angelina Akram)
There are a lot of things that we don't see of someone and the way they pass their time like who is Angelina a helpful and great student because she volunteered for 5 shifts during News Year's Bash and during her 'break' she still helped other clubs that needed more supplies. If it’s a shift or paperwork, many people can confidently rely on Angelina as she has proven herself a capable person.Though it may get rough and time consuming, it doesn’t stop her from experiencing the best and have a wonderful time in everything and that's Angelina's experience for New Year's bash.
