FAFSA The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the starting point for receiving any assistance from the government with college costs, and is also required by many colleges prior to awarding scholarships. The FAFSA can be filled out by SENIORS ONLY anytime after October 1 of their final year of high school. Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid Seniors who are not eligible to file a FAFSA due to their immigration or transgender status may file the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid instead. Qualified students who complete the Alternative Application may be found eligible for MAP Grant funds, which can be used at most Illinois colleges and universities. COMPLETING THE FAFSA, ALTERNATIVE APPLICATION FOR ILLINOIS AID, OR A STATE WAIVER IS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION.

Parents who choose not to allow or assist their child in completing either the FAFSA or Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid must sign off on the linked waiver form and provide a copy to their child's school counselor before the child can receive their high school diploma.
