Cold January mornings carry an energy of possibility as students move through high school hallways, backpacks heavy and goals quietly forming. A new semester arrives like an unwritten page, with winter skies mirroring the open-ended opportunities ahead. Students step forward carrying the experiences of the past year while holding tightly to the hope of what’s to come.
Freshmen continue a journey that still feels new, guided by curiosity and excitement. Sophomores settle into confidence, eager to define their place. Juniors approach the semester with purpose, recognizing it as a defining time to challenge themselves. Seniors savor their last stretch, balancing reflection with anticipation for life beyond graduation.
Teachers greet their classrooms with optimism, prepared to inspire and support growing minds. As the semester begins, the future feels wide open—filled with potential shaped by determination and dreams.

Graduates believe they are college ready. Evidence suggests many are not.
High school graduation season confronts us with a grim reality. Graduates generally have a collective illusion about their college readiness. Almost nine out of 10 2023 seniors (86%)—the class that started high school in the first year of the pandemic—report being “very” or “mostly” ready for college, according to American College Testing (ACT) research.
Students’ information to colleges says a great deal about their academic readiness while still living at home surrounded by supportive families, friends, and high school teachers, but it does not reveal much more. Emotionally ready? Mature enough? Psychologically prepared? How do you know if your kid is ready for college? Applications do not answer these questions.
