Background on Malala: Malala Yosafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education. Many women in Pakistan are not allowed to receive any formal education and Malala (19 years old) has committed her life to human rights advocacy for education and women in her community. In 2009, Malala was riding a bus and a member of the Taliban overtook the bus, called her out by name, and shot her in the left side of her forehead because of her outspoken nature. Malala was rushed to the hospital and spent many days in critical condition. Malala eventually recovered and vowed her life's work to fighting against gender discrimination and for the rights of all women around the world to receive a quality education. In 2014, Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy for education for all women and children and still remains the youngest recipient.
