Opinion Writing

We gave a quick introduction to opinion writing before we went on hiatus. Here are some tips for you when your student is writing:

• Encourage them to add a title.

• Encourage them to give some reasons.

• Encourage them to spell phonetically unless it is a known sight word.

• Please try not to spell for them. When students ask, “How do you spell _______?” say, “Good writers do their best and move on. What sounds do you hear? Where can you look to find that word?” Once we start spelling words for them, we become their strategy, and they will rely on us.
