When Vulnerable Paths began, we supported hundreds of different circumstances, across hundreds of different business areas. Learning and analysing these these projects and incidents resulted in our own principle based frameworks for managing Vulnerable Circumstances.These frameworks help provide intuitive and effective ways of solving complex problems and incidents, as well as create an environment for assessing and improving projects, programmes and group management. Below are is our 'Before, During, After and Empower, Support, Protect' model, which is our most commonly used.
Understanding 'Before, During, After' (BDA)
Before
These are the things you did, have done, or can do before doing something.
During
These are the things you did, have done, or can do during doing something.
After
These are the things you did, have done, or can do during doing something.
Understanding 'Empower, Support, Protect' (ESP)
Empower
Giving choices and/or information
Support
Using your resource to support the people you're working with.
This can include developing improved accessibility, or spending time and money to make processes and activities easier, safer or more effective for people.
Protect
Removing choices, often to lower or remove risks, reduce complexity, or reduce burdens.
Using these frameworks (BDA ESP)
The Approach
These two frameworks, when combined, create a table with 9 boxes which can be applied to an incident, circumstance or process.
If any boxes are empty, that is most likely where you have an issue or problem for equity, equality, inclusion or efficiency.
