Constraints & Criteria
Criteria:
- Rock or other material used will not wash away during high flows
- A rock large enough to resist blow out in high velocity streams is necessary
- Material anchored strongly enough to resist blow out in high velocity streams
- The updated design note must comply with all criteria in VA CPS 578
- The "USDA - NRCS Conservation Practice Standard 578: Stream Crossing" is the standard for cattle stream crossings in Virginia and includes general criteria such as location of crossing along the stream reach, which must still be followed
- Designing a crossing that will safely allow cattle and equipment to access fields south of Catawba Creek
Constraints:
- Obtaining material other than rock and geotextile for design testing
- Availability of required surveying equipment
- Coordinating with the Catawba Sustainability Center Manager to find suitable times to survey the site
- Designing a low cost crossing for the Catawba Sustainability Center
- Creating a sustainable crossing that requires little maintenance
- Find a proposed crossing location that will require little grading and clearing of vegetation
