In the Spring of 2024, the SSC team, who formally went by Tiger Claw Inc., competed for the first time in Virginia Tech history. The team was composed of four undergraduate students—Nichole Dorn (team captain), Brooke Dashiell, Alex Price, and Ethan Valera—along with two graduate advisors, Lucas Alexander and Natalie Romero, and faculty advisor Claire White. Tasked with redeveloping an abandoned industrial brownfield, the students transformed the site into a vibrant mixed-use development featuring multi-family housing, recreation fields, a repurposed rail line, a waterfront boardwalk, and more.
In March 2024, the team first debuted at the Virginias Conference regional competition, hosted by Virginia Tech, and secured first place, earning a spot at the national competition held at Brigham Young University (BYU). In June 2024, the team traveled to Provo, Utah, to compete against 18 other schools from across the nation. They achieved an impressive second-place overall finish and took first place in technical proposal and sustainability (two of the four subcategories).
