Introduced in 2021, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sustainable Solutions Competition (SSC) aims to encourage students to integrate sustainable solutions into real-world challenges by addressing the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet, and profit. Virginia Tech began competing in the SSC in 2024 with a team consisting of undergraduate students, graduate advisors, and a faculty advisor.
The competition simulates a request for proposal (RFP), presenting teams with a design scenario and objectives to address in their response. Using the existing site, students are challenged with redeveloping and revitalizing the land by creating a resilient design that aligns with the ENVISION sustainability rating system framework. Competitors are evaluated based on their performance in the following four categories: technical design proposal, sustainability, poster, and interview.
