Achieving and sustaining a recognized comprehensive school counseling program relies on providing evidence of improved skills, attitudes, and student outcomes. Like SMART goals the effectiveness of a CSCP must be measurable and attainable to all stakeholders. This process begins and continues with gathering, analyzing, and reporting data.
It is critical to know exactly how many participants are the recipients of our programs and services. Participation data can be attained through registration, caseload numbers, or visits to the counselor's office.
Example: 25 students participated in five 15-minute Mindfulness group exercises.
Mindsets and Behaviors would be the measurable skills, attitudes, and knowledge we focus our comprehensive program around.
Example: 75% of the 25 Mindfulness participants are able to demonstrate ability to manage transitions and ability to adapt to changing situations and responsibilities (B-SMS 10).
Outcome data brings evidence to our program and the work we do as professional school counselors. How have the interventions, groups, and delivered services affect student’s advancement, discipline, and achievement?
Example: Since implementing the Mindfulness lunch group, office discipline referrals have decreased during afternoon class transitions.
These are all important tools in determining what might be working and where places of improvement can be implemented in the counseling program.
With the unique individualized timeline that students transition to and from Noel C. Taylor, the marketing strategies will be easily adaptable and engaging to all stakeholders. Counselors will utilize the school social media platforms of twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to remain up to date and relevant in connecting with students and parents. The school website will continue to be a tool to promote past student success stories, future theme days, and activities. Counselors will present at staff meetings throughout the year to both promote and educate faculty and administration of the counseling program. In addition, whole school assemblies will give counselors a platform to reach the entire school population in an efficient manner.
Counselors will host community parent nights on a bimonthly basis to promote the counseling program and connect community resources available to current and new families. These in-person engagements will give all stakeholders an opportunity to establish and build community relationships. Counselors and/or administrators will also present at local Chamber of Commerce meetings to expand their community partner network.
This evaluation tool, per the Virginia Department of Education, can be used in evaluating the school counselor's performance and thus form a framework for what is working well and what can continually be improved upon.
