Halifax 4-H is fortunate to partner with Halifax County Public Schools. Many youth are introduced to 4-H through programs at school. 4-H Clubs meet in fourth and fifth grade classes in both public and private schools. Youth learn citizenship through the election of club officers and the use of parliamentary procedure. During each meeting, students also participate in a hands-on activity that supports a science SOL. 4-H also offers teachers equipment and curriculum for the Beginning of Life classroom embryology programs, as well as, economic education simulations at the elementary, middle, and high school level.
Halifax 4-H School Enrichment programs are designed to support 4th grade science standards. Topics include:
Scientific Investigation (Extensive science fair project book available upon request.)
Weather
Electricity
Force, Energy, and Motion
Embryology and Incubation
Virginia's Natural Resources/Watersheds
Sun, Moon, and Earth
Plants
Halifax 4-H School Enrichment programs are designed to support 5th grade science standards. Topics include:
Farm to School program: a nutrition-based program focusing on the growing and consumption of healthy food options. Students will engage in hands-on learning through a gardening program and they will participate in education activities related to agriculture, food, health, or nutrition.
After school programs such as SOL prep, etc.
Halifax 4-H has a limited number of incubators, egg turners, and brooders available to teachers upon request. We also provide fertilized eggs and a comprehensive embryology curriculum. If you are interested in hatching eggs in your classroom, please contact us at (434) 476-2147.
Halifax 4-H can partner with Halifax County Public Schools to offer economic educaion programs at the elementary, middle, and high school level through Kids' Marketplace, Real Money Real World, and Reality Store. These programs give students the opportunity to "fast forward" into the future with a career, a paycheck, and a month's worth of financial decisions. Volunteers from the community work with VCE and HCPS staff to man stations and help students through the decision-making process. We need volunteers to staff each station during all economic education programs.
Halifax 4-H has a number of curricula available to home schooling parents and co-ops through our Discover 4-H programs. Families are also encouraged to take advantage of the resources provided by W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center. The Center hosts field trips and provides a number of classes focusing on natural resources, leadership, and teambuilding.
