4-H Junior Camp is open to all youth ages 9-13 (at least 9 years old by September 30, 2022). Youth who turn 13 by January 1, 2022 must attend camp as a CIT (Counselor-in-Training). Campers must be residents of Goochland, Hanover or Powhatan Counties. Registration will open on March 1, 2022 for 4-Hers actively enrolled in a year-round 4-H club and younger siblings of counselors. Registration will open to the general public on March 2, 2022 at 6:30am. We will be close to capacity this year with 14 people per room in cabins and 6 to 7 campers per room in lodges to allow for social distancing recommendations. Campers can request up to two roommates and we will do our best to accommodate requests. Note that this year, people in the same room will also be assigned to the same class track and meal dining table.
This year's camp fee is $325 and includes meals and lodging for five days and four nights, a camp t-shirt, class supplies, and all activities. Total fees are due two weeks from submitting your registration. Limited scholarships are available - please contact the county you reside in for details. The camp fee can be paid by check or cash. More information about those options can be found on the Payment Page.
Bus Transportation is NOT be provided to and from camp this summer. Instructions for parent drop off at Jamestown 4-H Center may be found on the Parent Resources page.
Every morning and afternoon, campers will rotate through a variety of camp classes. Each cabin or lodge will be a part of a "pack" which serves as the camper’s “family” during the week of camp. "Packs" will be assigned within a block schedule to travel through camp program locations together. More information about classes offered can be found on the Classes Page.
Campers are rewarded for spirit, participation, and demonstration of good character!
There is free swim and recreation time each day, as well as evening programs and an opening campfire.
Each year we recruit teen volunteers ages 14 and up to serve as counselors for our camp. These teens, as well as our adult volunteers, 4-H Extension Staff, and 4-H Center Staff, complete a training series and are tested on core concepts before attending camp. Our staff is trained according to the American Camp Association requirements and you can rest assured that your child will have a safe, enjoyable experience at 4-H Camp!
Virginia’s 4-H camping program is recognized throughout the nation as a leader in 4-H camping programs. Each of the six Virginia 4-H Educational Centers has achieved and maintains American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation.
Parents and guardians should always look for the ACA seal when selecting a camp for their child to attend. Only about 25 percent of all camps in the nation are accredited by the ACA, the recognized camp accreditation organization in the United States. Having ACA accreditation means that the camp meets the highest standards for safety, food service and staffing, health care, and program quality.
Each 4-H Educational Center maintains these standards annually. Additionally, all 300 standards are reviewed every three years for reaccreditation. Each 4-H center program staff person, as well as the adult and teen 4-H volunteers who participate in camp, are carefully selected and trained prior to the camping event.
Please use the precautions outlined below as guidance on what you may expect to see during this summer's 4-H camp. Our team is continually utilizing several resources to adapt operations this season including: The American Camp Association, Virginia Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. As of March 2022, Virginia Cooperative Extension/Virginia Tech announced new guidance on masks. Requirements for masks have been reduced and it is suggested that masks be worn in counties that are in a high level. Currently, Hanover, Goochland and Powhatan counties are considered “medium” level in relation to Covid-19. If families are more comfortable wearing masks during camp – please plan for your child to wear one, however if you feel your child does not need a mask, that’s ok too. Everyone is encouraged to do what you feel most comfortable with. However, it is requested that we all respect each other – it’s ok to wear a mask, but it’s also ok not to wear a mask. Of course, there should be no bullying one way, or the other from anyone.
Some additional measures that we may take to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 during camp include: social distancing, small consistent groups, enhanced cleaning, and daily health screenings. Of course, should the Covid-19 numbers change, we may need to change our policies as well.
4-H Camps will follow VDH masking recommendations, including wearing a mask if symptoms appear, or if in the 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19, or if in the 10 days following an exposure to a person with COVID-19. All large indoor group activities will be limited and outdoor activities encouraged.
Specific Covid-19 measures during camp can be found on the Parent Resources Page.
Before registering for 4-H camp, it is recommended to see what the most up-to-date guidelines are. The full updated guidelines for masks through the 4-H program are linked HERE.
