This project explores the history of the Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium, founded in 1918 to provide treatment to African American patients in Virginia. The sanatorium functioned for more than forty years and treated more than 12,000 patients. The Nurse Training Program at Piedmont provided advanced training in tuberculosis care. More than 350 African American women graduated from Piedmont in the forty years from the first class in 1922 through the closure of the program in1 1960. The outcome of this research will be a book about Virginia's two tuberculosis sanatoria, Catawba (established in 1908) and Piedmont (established in 1918), available in an open access electronic format and a low cost print version. This website provides more information about patients, nurses, staff, and community members at Piedmont. To contribute materials about individuals, please see the "how to contribute" section of this website. This project is developed by faculty and advanced graduate students associated with the Department of History at Virginia Tech.
