Florence Virginia Brown was born on February 8, 1920, in Hopewell, Virginia, the daughter of William, who worked as a janitor at an apartment house, and Annie, who raised five children. Brown entered the Piedmont Nurse Training Program in September 1938 and graduated in May 1940. Brown enlisted in the US Army in 1942, after the United States entered the war, and earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Brown died in 1994 and is buried at Brig Gen Wm C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, Burlington County, New Jersey. Her grave marker includes her name and rank, 2LT US Army World War II, and is next to the marker for her husband, Peter E White, Jr., a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
