Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium

Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium

Piedmont Tuberculosis Sanatorium was founded in 1918 to provide treatment to African American patients in Virginia. The sanatorium functioned for more than forty years and treated more than 12,000 patients. The Nurse Training Program at Piedmont provided advanced training in tuberculosis care and was one of the first programs dedicated to educating African American women. More than 350 African American women graduated from Piedmont in the forty years from the first class in 1920 through the closure of the program in 1960. This website provides more specific information about patients, nurses, staff, and community members at Piedmont. To contribute materials about individuals, please see the "how to contribute" section of this website. This project is developed by faculty and advanced graduate students associated with the Department of History at Virginia Tech.
