Problem Statement

For this project we were tasked to improve the brewing process in the VT brewing pilot plant by reviewing and standardizing three unit operations: milling, yeast addition, and sparging, as batches have been inconsistent and inefficient. Additionally, previous standard operating procedures were not easily readable for students and new users of the system, and the tanks and piping of the system had not been properly labeled.

Goal

  • Develop an optimized and consistent brewing procedure for a novice/practitioner for the Essau-Huber pilot plant brewing system at Virginia Tech

Objectives

  • Apply valve tags and labels to the brewing system
  • Create Standard Operating Procedures for a novice/practitioner
  • Determine yeast pitching rates for our system
  • Adjust mill settings that will produce 80% brewhouse efficiency
  • Test efficiency of batch sparging
