BLACKSBURG, Va. - Claire Childress is the Director of Career Pathways and College Relations at the Career and Professional Development Center at Virginia Tech. Her work, which focuses largely on appreciative student advising and career decision making, is interdisciplinary and serves students from nearly every college at the university.
In over 25 years of work at Virginia Tech’s Career and Professional Development Center, Childress has seen change on a scale many will never fully understand. Her work has traveled down a winding road over the past decades, oftentimes adapting to meet new circumstances and new criteria as more students search for their passion while in Blacksburg.
Childress is seeing firsthand the ways in which 21st-century technology impacts not only her own work, but the job market for those graduating from university. While the core of the director’s work is still thriving, advising is now administered with new tools and a strikingly modern perspective.
