Students will write multiple narrative, opinion, and informative pieces in 4th grade. After writing a personal narrative story, students will write a realistic fiction story. Students learn that the lenses they bring to reading fiction can also be brought to writing fiction, as they develop believable characters with struggles and motivations and stories to tell. Next, students will learn the value of organization and form as they gather evidence to support and express an opinion on topics they know well. Students will then tackle historical research in which they collect evidence and use details to vividly describe people and events during the California Gold Rush. They will then use the informative writing skills they learned to write an additional informative piece. Afterwards, they will learn how to write a literary essay as they write about fiction. We will end the year with a creative graphic writing unit.
