Design Challenge 2021

Design Challenge- HMW Bring Back Joy?

Day 1

Today, we started work on our first design challenge. We started off with a silly costume competition, and I dressed up with an old mask and a hat. I found these two hats and put them on for a funny photo. I liked how creative people were with their costumes and how fast they created them.

For the next activity, we shared something in our life that brings us joy. I shared a kangaroo stuffed animal because we traveled to Australia a few years ago. This brings back the joy and fun memories from traveling.

Then we talked about how different things bring different people joy, and we talked about the different love languages. My love language is "Quality Time," which means I appreciate it when people spend time with me.

Finally, we all chose a USER -- WHO we wanted to focus bringing joy to. I chose my Mom because she does a lot for me and my family.

From today, I learned the different ways to bring people joy.

My goal tomorrow is to find an idea and create a prototype.

Day 2

Yesterday, I decided my USER would be my Mom. I interviewed / researched and learned that she likes being outside, being with others, and doing arts and crafts. A thing that bothers my user is the news.

After interviewing my mom . I have come up with this needs statement. My mom needs a way to cope with stress in order to feel joy in 2021.

During the ideation process, my favorite ideas were drawing pictures and spending time with her. The idea I decided to prototype are postcards because she likes art and drawings. Postcards that have positive messages will brighten up her day and relieve her stress.

Our rough prototype looks like this.

My goal by April 10th is to make a poster that has positive messages and amazing details so she can look at them everyday.

What I learned from this process is that I can use design thinking for real problems and help loved ones.

What I’m the most excited about is the reactions and feeling that she will have when receiving the cards.

Day 3

The next steps I took were on Canva. I used Canva as it is easy to make cards and you can add elements to your design. First i made card and added flowers using the elements. Next I added text. Then I changed the background color to match the design. Finally I edited the colors of the text and changed the fonts.

When I shared my prototype with my mom, she was exited and thankful.

My favorite part of this design challenge was making the final prototype because it was fun.

What I was the most proud of was the end result of my prototype.

What I learned from using the design thinking process is we can use the things we learn in school to help others.
