Why are all California public school teachers required to use the California ELD Standards?

The CA ELD Standards, when used in tandem with state content standards, are designed to assist English learners in building English proficiency, refine the academic use of English, and are designed to provide them access to subject area content.

Integrated & Designated ELD

What is the difference between integrated ELD (English language development) & Designated ELD?

Integrated ELD (iELD)

Integrated ELD refers to teachers providing language clarification and language acquisition support during regular content area lessons. The goal for Integrated ELD is for English Learners (ELs) to learn the content and academic language used in each lesson. Learning Objectives for integrated ELD lessons come directly from the content standards of the lesson being taught, such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, History Social Science, and Science. All teachers teach Integrated ELD.

Designated ELD (dELD)

Designated ELD, on the other hand, is a protected time during the regular school day when teachers provide lessons for English Learners to develop English language proficiency. In the Vista Unified School District, our middle schools course is called Academic Language & Literacy (A.L.L.). The overall goal of ELD instruction is for students to learn English at the level of a native speaker. In school settings, ELD instruction focuses on English Learners developing the language skills needed to learn content taught in English and to be able to express their content knowledge in English.

Successful ELD in the A.L.L. dELD Classroom (Designated ELD)

Depending on the number of ELs in your class, create leveled groups or meet with a small group of mixed ELs; differentiate instruction. The ELD RT can work with you to help create leveled groups according to their ELPAC scores, language proficiency levels, and other language factors.

Suggestion: Establish a rotation system in the classroom while teaching dELD. Provide Level 3's and Level 4's an independent work station in the rotation; for example: journals/writing, reading stamina, online programs, while you pull the Level 1's and 2's for small group language

Suggestion: Use the VUSD Secondary ELD Units or pre teach vocabulary to support content areas (ELA, Science, Social Studies, Math). The ELD RT can gather resources that will support the content area topics.

Suggestion: Bring back or review routines and procedures. The ELD RT can help you develop your existing routines and procedures or help you with establishing new ones! This ManeuveringtheMiddle.com link has excellent and easy to implement routines & procedures ideas for middle school classrooms. Classroomscreen.com offers a free version of its application that has timers, music, random name picker, conversation symbols for classroom management and group work, and more!

Schedule dELD in your plans and protect the time; think flexibly and consider providing three 27 minute sessions vs. one 96 minute block. Consider two 15 minute sessions vs. a single 30 minute block. Start small if needed and build capacity in your classroom. Break up the time and material into comprehensible chunks.
