I have been teaching in Vista Unified School District for 13 years. I have worked as a multiple subject classroom teacher, after-school educational program supervisor, Encuentros instructor, and physical education instructor. I am the Wellness team department chair as well as an instructor. I serve as chairman of school site council, I am also the VTA rep at VIDA, and sit on site based curricular leadership. As founding faculty of Vista Innovation and Design Academy, I feel very strongly about developing a program to promote wellness for all students through physical education and nutrition lessons. Outside of work, I enjoy learning more about health and wellness through professional development and the use of technology. Education is also very important; therefore, I am continuing my education through National University to complete my administrative credential.

Grading

Wellness academic grades are rubric scores based upon student effort during workouts, improvement on student technique over the course of the unit, and their final unit exam.

Scores breakdown:

Workouts- 50%

Final Exam-25%

Improvement-25%

Work ethic grades weigh heavily on effort during practice, modeling, instruction, and workouts. Citizenship grades are behavior grades based upon the student’s attitude and behavior during class sessions.

Assessments are graded as:

4- Mastery as the ability to effectively teach each component tested as well as model clean technique without flaws.

3- Got it! Students can demonstrate competency in the explanation of learned unit components as well as safe and effective technique with few flaws.

2- Not quite yet! Students are demonstrating effort towards competency of learned unit components as well as the ability to execute those components with assistance.

1-Not yet! Even with assistance from instructors and peers the student is unable to demonstrate competency or execute those learned components.

0-Inadequate Progress as the student’s competency cannot be determined. The student’s inability to make an attempt to demonstrate competency is having a negative impact on their grade and may affect their eligibility to remain a student at VIDA.
