Through this self-introduction, not only did I learn more about my classmates, but I also gained a better understanding of myself. I learned how to introduce myself in a clearer and more organized way, and I also learned to pay attention to my tone and word choice to make the introduction sound more natural. I realized that adding some personal touches to my introduction can make it easier for others to remember me. Since this was my first time introducing myself at VIS, I felt very nervous. I noticed that I tend to speak faster when I am nervous, so I need more practice. I also need to improve the logic of my speech and avoid jumping around too much.
For this assignment, I remember we only had about 10 minutes to prepare the content we were going to present. That really helped me improve my organizational skills and oral speaking skills. Our teacher also gave us feedback on our presentations. He said that my pronunciation was not clear because I was reading instead of speaking naturally, and that I needed to add a conclusion so my speech would not end abruptly. The feedback was very helpful for me because it allowed me to recognize the weaknesses in my speech.
After the first time the villain bullied the main character, he chose to run away and back down. But the second time, he didn’t choose to escape or give in. Instead, he awakened to his true self, and that was what finally ended the bullying. Through this story, I realized that when we are bullied, we should choose to stand up and fight back instead of running away. This is a very meaningful story.
In addition, our teacher also gave us a vocabulary list, which helps me to know what does the story talking about, and I also learned those useful words.
We only read the first paragraph. In my opinion, this book has several words that I don’t know. Our teacher told us to use a highlighter to mark the words we didn’t understand. After I highlighted all the words I didn’t know, I searched their meanings on the internet, and that really helped me learn many words that are usually used in stories. I remember that I wrote six pages in the notebook.
Our topic in this essay is "the most influential person in my life", the person I wrote is my mother because she is a role model in my life. In this essay, I mention the thing that we usually do together, our conflicts and how did we fix it, and our relationship. Our teacher also gave us feedback, he stated that I need to fix my grammar issue, and the word choice. I make some changes like, for example I change "The most influential person in my life is crucially my mother." into "The most influential person in my life is undoubtedly my mother." Because that it is incorrect to use crucially here, and it sounds better to use undoubtedly.
In this task, we have about five minutes to prepare the one-minute speech. After I completed my speech, I noticed that I had a serious problem while I was giving the speech- I only focused on my document and read it, but I didn't have any eye contact with the teacher. Now I learned this lesson, and next time I will pay attention on the eye-contact. Our teacher mentioned that I can give a clear conclusion in this speech, so after that I added a conclusion in the end of this document.
After we finished reading of the scope, we had a test to review the content of the novel. I learned a lot after I read this novel, except I learned many vocabulary, I also understand the joy of reading. The part that we read is talking about this kid Veer gets suddenly moved to a weird jungle town where a local guy is poisoned. Veer's dad thinks the murder is a cover-up for a much bigger secret, so he tells Veer to find out what dangerous stuff is really going down.
This story is about a Chinese girl who feels embarrassed when her family invites her crush and his family for a traditional Chinese Christmas dinner.
In the end, she learns from her mother to be proud of her Chinese identity, even if it makes her different from others.
I remember that after we finished this paragraph, the teacher asked us to share about our families' culture. I listened to my classmate and I aware that there is so many multiple culture between us.
For this presentation assignment, our teacher provided us with some topics to choose from first. After we discussed for a while, we decided to talk about the benefits of having habits and how hobbies form a healthy lifestyle. We also added some intended themes to analyze, for example, time management and personality. I think I did well in this presentation because I memorized the speech script and I practiced it for many days. After this presentation, the teacher said that my speech was clear, but he also said I could try to add more content to strengthen my point. Next time, I will try to work more closely with my teammates, speak clearly, and do more research to strengthen my point.
For this one-minute speech, I believe that I improved my performance during the test because I spoke clearly and I didn't look at the script so much, so I could make eye contact with audiences. My hobby is watching anime, and I discussed when I started, how I started this hobby, the highlights, and the negative aspects of this hobby. Our teacher said I had some grammar error and there was some repetition. Next time, I will try to pay attention to my grammar, and also try to avoid repeating something.
This test is a little different from the previous exams. Our teacher let us make some notes about the book to prepare for the exam. I spent lots of time writing down the notes and trying to memorize them before the exam. So I did quite well in this test, which made me feel a great sense of achievement.
The main goal of this case is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. From my perspective, education is a crucial part of every life. It is very unfair that some people can go to school while others can't. The education level can even determine the career of a person, and it will impact your salary eventually.
The overall goal of SDG 3 is to ensure everyone's health and promote well-being for all ages people in the world. To achieve this objective, they took some action, such as preventing disasters, reducing road casualties, and also trying to support some laws and impose regulations. SDG 3 is veryimportant because it helps people stay healthy, and have better lives.
What did you learn and your goals for future classes?
I learned how to make slides and depict the important information on them through group presentations. I understand what the fault is when I am speaking in the one-minute speech.
How does it connect with other classes?
In almost every subject, we will make a slide show for distinct topics. I learned how to make slides in a group this class. Sometimes we need to check wedsite and read resources for data and information. In this lesson, we read novels which makes it easier to scan the content.
For this semester, I learned multiple topics like novels, passage reading, vocabulary and grammar learning, and group and individual presentations, writing essays... Those topics improved not just my English skills, but also let me know how to engage in preparation for tests and presentations, and build my confidence. Among those topics, I enjoyed reading the paragraph during classes the most. When we were reading them, our teacher would ask us some questions that were related to the topics, and this interactive activity was really fun for me. I can answer my own opinion, while my classmates can give different thoughts about that. The topics of the passage also change; therefore, I can read different kinds of articles and learn more. At the beginning of this semester, I struggled with my reading skills, and I was not confident in my speaking since I just transferred from a local school to an international school. But in the classes this semester, I practiced my reading skills with novels and articles, and improved my speaking confidence through one-minute speeches and presentations. I practiced my reading skills by reading a novel and articles, and I built my speaking confidence through the "one-minute speech" and presentations. However, I also faced some challenges this semester. At first, I wasn't very confident in speaking English, so I did not perform very well on the first few speaking assignments. However, my teacher always leaves feedback for my performance, no matter whether it is a presentation or a one-minute speech. For example, my teacher said that I didn't pronounce clearly because I looked at the script too much, and I should speak naturally with eye contact with audiences. At the next exam, I tried to pronounce more clearly with eye contact, but the teacher still stated that I need to have a conclusion for my speech to make it stronger. I applied those two important tips in the third test, and I eventually got a good grade for it, which makes me feel a great sense of achievement. Now, I feel confident when I speak English, and I have better skills to read information and books. In the future, I will keep my learning attitude and keep improving my English skills. This class connects to SDG 4, Quality Education, because I developed my reading, writing, and speaking skills. It also relates to SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, as I collaborated effectively with classmates during group projects and class activities. English is related to the subjects that I need to use it for. I need to speak clearly in order to ask teachers questions, while I also need to use English to communicate with people at the PBL exhibition. I encountered a dilemma when I was reading the class novel, Red Eyes. I don't have the habit of reading English novels, so it was really tough for me to read this novel initially. Therefore, I tried to highlight the words that I am not familiar with and write down the Mandarin beside the words, which is really helpful. I will keep trying to improve my reading skills by reading more books because it is still a little bit hard for me to fully immerse myself in a novel. Next semester, I will keep trying to improve my reading skills by reading more books. I also plan to practice speaking English every day to become even more confident in presentations and class discussions.
I have many improvements to make on these assignments, like the one-minute speech and the self-introduction presentation. There are several weaknesses in my presentation, such as not speaking clearly and always feeling nervous. These are the parts I need to work on.
2. This assignment connects to my self-introduction in other classes because I also had to talk about myself clearly and confidently.
3. It helped me think about communication as a global skill. Being able to present ideas in English is important in a world where people from different countries work together.
4. We had a lesson about name before. In that lesson, I realized that there're many different culture that affect there name. So it connected with many countries.
5. I remember that in the class we learned about different name, I was responsible for Singapore's tradition names, and I found that there tradition name was very weird for me.
6. It builds on my past writing and speaking tasks because I needed to use vocabulary and grammar we learned before.
7. I became more organized by making an outline before writing. In the future, I want to practice speaking more often so I feel less nervous.
8. My classmates told me to slow down when speaking, so I practiced speaking more clearly. This made my presentation easier to understand.
9. I think it connect to my entire life. I need to use English in the future, and in these assignment helps me learn more grammar, vocabulary, and the most important part, speaking. In the future, I will have lots of opportunities to talk, and the assignment allows me to practice my speaking skills.
10. My strength was designing the layout and choosing pictures that matched the content. But I also need to learn how to organize the content.
11. I think my main weakness is that I'm not a great English speaker and I lack the confidence to speak. So I need to practice my speaking in my free time. I can use some software to practice speaking with AI.
12. I enjoyed creating the slides and adding visuals, because it made my project look more professional.
13. I feel proud of my work, but I know I can still improve my confidence and fluency when speaking.
