When I was still in a group with Jordan, Nathan, and Kevin, we made a collage about SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
After I changed a group, now, we made an idea of a new Taiwanese 1000 NTD bill.
We made a mood board of our chosen topic, migrant workers. Our group name is Key Rights, we want to advocate for migrant rights in Taiwan. Migrants often consist of construction workers, house workers, and caretakers, in our project we will be mostly looking at house workers and caretakers, so we used some colours and pictures that will represent them.
For our project pitch 1, we made a presentation that is about our topic of migrant workers. There was some things that had a little bit of styreotypes, we didn't know about that. After the feedback though, we changed and tried to take off the styreotypes because we are trying to advocate for rights.
We tried the project pitch again, and this time we had more content that we presented, we also tried to take off all of the styreotypical parts in the presentation.
For the logo design, we did 50 thumbnails about 2 or 3 times. We then picked our best 3 thumbnails and redraw them to look better, after that we pick a final 1 from those 3 thumbnails. We drew that thumbnail with different elements of art. We then pick the best 1 out of all of the groups, mine got picked, so I do the final logo design for my group's logo. I took longer to make the logo design because my laptop can't run Affinity, so I have to borrow an ipad from the school office to finish the logo design.
When we were making the brand kit, we tried to take all of our ideas and put them together to fit into all the work that we have already done. I think that it turned out pretty good.
Here, we were making a logo for each of our groups, our logo evolved from a key in a lock to a key that is held by a hand because our group's name is Key Rights. I was the key designer of the logo because after the vote, people liked my idea for what our logo would be. I also like to do design and draw, so I enjoyed it a lot.
Right at the end of the logo designing phase, we started to make the group magazines. I didn't play a big role in the magazine part because it was mostly writing, and I also had to do the tangible design after the logo, but at the beginning, I helped to design the magazine layout and wrote some paragraphs in the magazine. For the logo, I got feedback from my classmates, something that I am proud of is that the teacher told me that some people thought that the drawing was using AI, but it was actually just me drawing it. For the magazine, we got feedback from the teacher, we got behine everyone, but we came back with efficient and hard work.
This week, I got to make my own shirt for the exhibition, I think it looks cool because it is hand made. To clarify, I didn't make the whole shirt, I only did the printing on the front of the shirt. From this, I learned a lot about how this style of shrt is made. We also did a mock exhibition where I got to present to someone in a higher grade than me, I met up with him after the mock exhibition and got feedback from him, he said that I did will, but spoke a little bit too fast.
This Saturday, we are going to do exhibition, so we practiced our exhibition pitch on Tuesday. The teachers said that my pitch was overall good because I moved through it with a good pace and spoke about what I have contributed. The part that I didn't do well was that I forgot to talk about how I used the elements of art and the principals of design in the logo and tangible design that I made. I have already planned what to say about them, but I forgot because I got too carried into the other parts of the project. This was really a mistake that I shouldn't have made, I will try to remember them, so I don't make the same mistakes during the exhibition.
For the logo design project, I think that I could have borrowed our home computer which can run Affinity from my parents and my brother who often use it. For the project pitch, people told us to not use something stereotypical, although when we were making the slides we didn't think that it was, we will still try our best to take those parts out. For me, the project pitches remind me of the presentations that I did last semester in PBL class, those presentations were about Taiwanese indigenous rights, we had to make game plans about indigenous rights, at the time, we also had to make project pitches for the games. Comparing these two project pitches, I am now better at presentation skills and splitting work between group mates. Although I have improve, I think that I still need to work on my presentation skills, I also need my volume to be more louder, so other classmates can understand me. I plan to improve my presentation and speaking abilities by looking at more political leader's speeches and analyzing them. One part of the magazine that I worked on was the layout, I drew it on paper, then my group mates made it digital. We received feedbacks addressing the fonts and the placement of objects like text and pictures, we responded by fixing those issues and improving the quality of the photos. This work connects to work from my PBL project last semester because when we were making our posters last semester, we also had some issues with the layout, we fixed those issues by reducing the amount of words and increasing the amount and placement of pictures. Compared to my past working habits, I now don't just do random assignments that I want to do, I now plan the time that I would need to take to finish each assignments, and choose them based on the time needed. This semester, I have also learned how to work better with different group members and try my best to help them finish the tasks that the leader assigns to me to finish before a deadline. One thing that I still need to do better for PBL is time management because this semester I have been overwhelmed by the amount of work many times, and I don't want that to happen again, especially when I am working in a group. I plan to keep trying to work quickly and effectively at the same time to finish all of my work on time and get good grades for all of those works.
Our social issue is the rights of the migrant workers living in Taiwan. They are often not protected by the law, or not treated as equally as Taiwanese local workers. These migrant workers often come from places in Southeast Asia, they often come because of financial issues, or social issues, some of them still have family in their home country, so they need as much money from their work as possible. The thing that surprised me the most during the research was that a lot of migrant workers were bonded to individual employers that used contracts, and that the law used to not protect them from harsh working conditions until a recent government intervention that included them into the LSA law. Before this project, I thought that migrant workers were contracted by the government, that is why I was surprised that they were actually bonded to individual employers through contracts. Some people might not know the hardships that these migrant workers are going through, such as low payment, terrible living and working conditions, or overwork. All of this research led me to become more concern about this issue, and made me more active in advocating for these migrant workers.
When I think of graphic design, I think of making something digitally like a logo, or a brand name. I have always liked this subject because I want to work in art and design in the future. My design skills improved over the course of this semester through actively designing the logo, tangible design, process poster layout, and magazine layout. I think that the single most dominant principles of design in these projects are emphasis, contrast, and balance. They appear in most of my designs for our group, Key Rights. I used graphic design to communicate these social justice issues to people by making designs that can spread awareness to people for the exhibition, I do this by making my designs remind people of social justice and human rights. The designs that I am most proud of are the logo and tangible design because those projects were done completely by me, with some feedback and ideas from my teammates, those designs show my hard work towards advocacy for migrant rights.
