Smart Space and Dashboard

Proline Hair Design is a salon in Pretoria that provides the service of doing hair and also sells high end hair products. Most of the salons income comes from the sale of the high end products that are sold to their clients. The salons goal to help their clients have great hair.

The challenge was to create a smart technology solution that addresses a small businesses needs and goals. The smart technology needs to be part of a smart technology system that makes the businesses working environment a smart space.

Problem

The way in which the products being sold are displayed makes them vulnerable to theft. The owner needs a way to know what products should be used for a client, keep record of the health of a clients hair and to know what products leave the salon.

How might we help the salon know what products to use for a client according to the state of their hair and how might we help the owner keep stock of the products on sale?

Solution

Have a system that allows a hairdresser to record the state of a clients hair. The system lets the hairdresser know what products should be used. Have a shelf with sensors that records when a product has been removed.

Research Summary

A lot of research had to be done in order for there to be understanding on the different smart technologies that are found in smart spaces and how these technologies work. The understanding gained on the smart technologies helped to determine where in the salon the technologies would be used and how clients and staff interact with the smart technologies.

Staff needs to know when there is a client that walks into the salon
There needs to be a better way to display the products that they are selling
The health of their clients hair is the priority
It would be nice for customers to be able to see the progress of their hair (to see its improvement)
The target clients are A & B income clients

User Interactions

A bell sound goes off when someone walks in and out of the salon
Client will scan their fingerprint in order to activate their information on the smart mirror
What the client did last time and the state that their hair was in is shown in the mirror
Hairdresser logs in the client's current hair state regarding its health. The system then recommends what products to use as well as a product that the client to consider buying
Coffee machine switches on and prepares coffee
The holder carrying the products used by the salon is opened
The products for purchase holder is open. A sensor records that a product has been removed and transfers this information to the stock taking system.

Technologies used in the smart space

Motion Sensors

Passive Infrared Motion Sensor

The sensor will be used to detect anyone coming into the salon to therefore trigger the alarm to go off. This is to let employees know that someone has entered the salon instead of having clients stand waiting for assistance or look for an employee.

Smart Mirror

The mirror will be used to show employees their clients hair condition the last time they were at the salon, the products that the system recommends the hairdresser uses for the client as well as to keep record of the health of the clients hair. The hairdresser will also be able to log in the state of the clients hair at the beginning of appointments so that the system can recommend a product. The information on the mirror will be shown after the client has scanned their finger print at the front desk.

Automated Pantry

The Automated pantry will allow for their to be actual storage for the products and also save space in the salon for employees to walk around and move. This will also decrease the chances of theft in the salon because everything is neatly packed away.

Smart shelves (weight sensors)

The smart shelves are going to do the stock taking. When a product is removed from the shelf the weight sensors will sense thing and then collect the data. This will make stock taking easier and faster for the business.

Smart Machine (Coffee Machine)

The smart machine will be controlled through the dashboard where the hairdresser just presses a button on the dashboard to have the machine make the coffee. The machine will also automatically clean the milk system.

Storyboard

The storyboards communicate how the smart technology is going to work in the salon as well as how clients and staff interact with the smart technologies. The smart technologies are also used to address the problems of safety of the salons products as well as providing a solution to how the smart technologies help the staff keep record of their clients.

Prepare the system

When the owner walks through the door, the motion sensors detect that someone has walked into the salon. The motion sensors are kept on all the time for safety purposes
He then switches on the computer at the front desk
Once the computer us switched on he opens the dashboard and switches on the other technolgies such as the smart mirrors as well as the coffee machine.
Once the smart mirror has been switched on the information of the next client is automatically shown on the mirror.

Client logs in

When the client logs in they scan their finger at the front desk. The system automatically records that they did in fact show up for their appointment.
When the client scans their finger the scanner communicates to the coffee machine to make coffee
The staff working with the client uses the smart mirror to record the current state of the client hair. This information is necessary to keep record of the clients hair journey at the salon. This also helps the system to later on recommend products that the user should buy.

Service and Sales

The hairdresser washes the clients hair
The hairdresser dry's the clients hair
The clients hair is moisterised
Once the hair dresser is done, the hair dresser clicks the done button notifying the system that the the appointment is over
The system recommends products that the client can buy according to the recorded condition of the clients hair at the beginning of the appointment
The hairdresser pushes a button on the side of the cupboard containing the products to shuffle through the products as the shelves are automated

Service and sales

The products being purchased are removed from the shelf. This resulting in the weight sensors in the shelves detecting that stock has bee removed from the shelves
The system automatically records that stock has been removed from the shelves and this is automatically reflected on the dashboard
The hair dresser scans the products being purchased by the client and the client pays for the products
The client leaves happy and satisfied with the service

Walk through Demo

The walk through demo is an animation created to show how the smart space would work. The animation was created with animaker. In the animation the owner, Anthony takes the viewer along as he spends the day working. The viewer is able to see how the smart technologies work and they have been incorporated into the salon to make it a smart space.

The tehnologies chosen for the salon would be very helpful as they would make the jobs of the employees a lot more easier. Even though this is so a lot more refinement is needed in the incorporation of the tcehnologies into the enviornment as well as how the technologies work together to make work more enjoyable for employees and to provide clients a better experience. That being said, the technologies put into the environment do in fact address the issue of safety with regards to the salons products and does help employees work better by having their clients hair condition recorded in the system. This helps the employees do a better job in working towards their clients having healthy hair.
