Firstly, join the Theater Tech Remind: @vttech
This lets us communicate with you and for you to know all the information you need.
A very important part of theater is tech. Tech is a very hands on team and is practically the back bone of all productions. We might have amazing actors but without tech there would be no set.
In tech we build, paint, set design, clean, organize, costuming, trench management, and cosmetology. Its all about getting your hands dirty.
One of the most amazing things about tech is the artistic side. We as the artistic team get to paint our own mark on the sets. We create the most outstanding designs and beauty of the shows. We also have a amazing technical side which includes the lighting and sound. This plays a huge role in every production. The lights and sound doesn't only play a big role. it is also one of the keys of the whole theater. Without these two important factors, the theater productions would be dry, not as good as it is now. The lights and the sound is one of the many backbones of theater. Literal blood, sweat, and tears are put into the design thinking of these two important technology types. The people who work this are put up to the highest level of stress due to you repairing something that does not work at the worst time possible.
The person lucky enough to get the task of operating lights or sound, will not only have a blast. But will get the challenge of testing their patients.
It seems like smooth sailing from here, right? Well, there are some requirements that have to be met in order to join our team.
As a tech member you must be willing to work alone and be independent. We are old enough to not have to baby sit kids and frankly its not fun.
Be prepared to get dirty. We will be dealing with A LOT of paint throughout each show. Make sure you wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, if not think ahead and bring extra.
One of the most important things is to make sure you clean up after yourself. We have all spent too many hours after school washing dirty paint brushes and cleaning paint off the floor. Lets just make it easy for everybody and yourself.
Be respectful to the space, others time and especially to each other as well as yourself.
Drama is meant to be onstage, not backstage, not during our rehearsals. We dont have time for it. If drama or rumors are brought into light they will be addressed and taken care of in private.
If you are told to do something don't procrastinate and just do it. We work fast paced shows which means fast turn arounds. We have to be ready to work and put in the effort. We expect full commitment to the jobs you have been assigned and to stay on top of it.
Don't mess around with the power tools or any type of dangerous equipment. If you goof off or fool around while working with the said equipment you are using, you will not be allowed to go near it for the rest of the theater years to come.
One of the most important things is to have an open mind. If there is something that you think will look better in a different spot or think a small detail can add a whole lot to the set. Tell us about it and express your thoughts.
If you happen to break something or mess something up, or even if you see someone else do so, please just come up to one of the leaders (Stewart, Bustillos, Watson, Julia, Paula, or Kollin) and tell us. This will be a whole lot easier on yourself instead of us finding it and trying to fix it at the last moment.
Theater Tech may work in the shadows and wear all black, but that doesn’t mean your efforts are invisible. - Stewart
