We cannot stress enough how important inclusion is, especially in such a competitive environment like Stuyvesant. We want to bring the school together and offer as much support as we can. School should be helpful, interactive and fun for everyone, no matter their race, gender, or sexuality. We want Stuyvesant to be a school of acceptance!
Policies that involve INCLUSION:
Consensual Recording
🦠 Students have always been required to stay home if they are feeling under the weather or are sick, but this factor has been particularly emphasized within the past year and a half due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the remote learning option has been eliminated, students who are required to stay home are being held back from learning and completing a considerable amount of learning and work. While these students most likely email their teachers for the week's notes and work, the material may still be confusing and difficult to understand. Our plan to resolve such complications is that with teacher and student consent, students can request for the teacher to audio record the lesson(s) that they miss. This way, students can listen to the audio recording to clear up any confusions and stay caught up with any updates or notes that the teacher mentions in class.
School Spirit Events
🤪 We have also noticed quite a lack of school spirit in the Stuyvesant community. Due to COVID-19, the most recent pep rally was only able to hold 100 of the 3300 students at Stuyvesant. We need something more inclusive and easy to bring the school together. During our presidency, we would focus on adding things like bake sales to raise money for Stuyvesant and grade dances to promote friend-making and healthy socialization after being trapped in our houses for a year and a half. We would work with the Stuyvesant Red Cross to allow freshmen to volunteer at such events and receive community service hours. Priority for such roles would also be given to freshmen being that spots at volunteering events tend to be competitive to obtain.
❄️ One event we could hold is a gingerbread house making contest right before winter break, where students could pay approximately $10 to build a gingerbread house. Students may enter individually, in pairs, or in groups, and the school can vote for their favorite gingerbread house, as they did for Halloween costumes. This would be a fun activity that would put the school in a festive mood and allow students to spend time with their friends. The winner would receive a holiday care package made with the money raised from the contest!
👩🔬 Another event could be a festival for all the amazing creators at Stuyvesant. There could be performances, an art auction/gallery, STEM invention displays, and more. Parents could get a full tour of the school while watching these demos. Students could take a glimpse into the incredible talent at Stuyvesant, and we could raise money by having tickets that cost money.
🚺 There have been countless reports this year that the feminine products at Stuyvesant are ineffective and hard to use. Whether it be a bake sale, an auction, or more, we propose we host a fundraiser to make money to improve the hygienic products in the girls bathrooms. Normal bodily functions should have proper and easily accessible products, especially in a place like a high school.
Commute Buddies
🚊Commuting to and from school is a huge part of a student’s life. It’s important to have a companion with you, and so that’s why we want to set up a way for students to find commuting buddies. We were thinking of setting up a google form by borough to send out to all freshmen, surveying which trains/buses they take and what neighborhoods they are from. Once we had all the responses, we could connect those with common information. CLICK HERE TO CHECK THIS OUT!!!
