We are genuinely looking to make Stuyvesant a better place for students to grow and mature. We want nothing more than to help ease any troubles that freshmen experience. We both see and want the endless benefits we could bring to our school, and we can’t wait to begin. We care about each and every one of you, and want to ease any inconvenience deterring your optimal high school experiences.
Policies that involve COMPASSION:
Exams and Homework
😰 Stuyvesant is known for its large workload and constant quizzes and tests. Because of this, the Stuyvesant community gave specific subjects designated testing days so that students don’t end up with several tests in one day. However, this only leaves boundaries for tests and not quizzes, meaning that students can receive multiple quizzes in one day. In a majority of classes, tests/exams/quizzes count for an entire 60% of a student’s grade, so the stress that comes upon a student when they end up with one exam and three quizzes in one day is enormous. In order to resolve such stress, we would work to make quizzes have designated days as well.
📓Another policy that has arisen from Stuyvesant’s reputation for its large workload, is the homework policy of a limit of 30 minutes of homework a night per regular class and 60 minutes per AP class. However, it tends to be that teachers disregard this limit or unintentionally go over, causing students to be further sleep deprived. By setting a policy that requires teachers to make assignments due two days later, students will be forced to manage their time but also not be piled with assignments on top of having to study. This allows teachers to still assign homework every day, but alleviates some of the students’ stress.
ID Pictures
📸 Student IDs are crucial to our everyday lives, necessary for attendance, going out during frees, and general identification. Not only that, but we use these cards for the rest of our time at Stuy. Not just the cards...but the pictures too. It is a common complaint at Stuy that the pictures never turn out quite pleasant. Although it makes sense it is unrealistic to take a good looking picture of every kid for their ID, it is very realistic to allow kids to upload their own picture. Students should be allowed to personalize their identification, and shouldn’t have to be embarrassed of something they need access to daily. A high schooler's image is quite important to them, especially at this age where we are slowly figuring out who we are. It’s important we aren’t ashamed of our ID cards. Above the dramatization, they do look pretty bad. Let’s fix that!
The Boys Bathroom
🚽In a cotton swab lab conducted by a couple of students, it was revealed that the boys bathrooms are significantly dirtier than the other bathrooms. Due to this fact, it is also generally known that many boys prefer not to use the bathrooms at school for fear of the dirt. It certainly isn’t healthy for students to not relieve their natural body functions due to a lack of sanitization. We would solve the main problem of the smell by the use of Febreeze. As two girls, clearly we aren’t affected by this issue, but we still care about the well being of the males in our grade. :)
