Since its inaugural meeting in 2015, the Zebrafish and Medaka Drug Discovery (ZMDD) Conference has aimed to advance precise and rapid drug development through the sharing and discussion of research achievements. These include the development of screening methodologies to evaluate drug efficacy and toxicity using small fish species such as zebrafish and medaka, the establishment of disease models, and the elucidation of pharmacological mechanisms based on these models. Drug discovery research utilizing small fish is more widely adopted in Europe, the United States, and China than in Japan, and further expansion in the demand for related equipment and analytical technologies is anticipated.

The 12th Annual Meeting will be held in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, in Japan. Utsunomiya is nationally renowned for its gyoza culinary culture, and with the recent introduction of the LRT (Light Rail Transit) system, transportation within the city has become even more convenient. In addition, the World Heritage site of Nikko is within easy reach, offering participants the opportunity to enjoy the region’s history, nature, and gastronomy in conjunction with the conference.

At this meeting, under the theme of contributing to healthier daily lives through drug discovery, we will provide a forum for active discussion from both academic and industrial perspectives. Topics will include the latest advances and future challenges in screening methodologies for evaluating drug efficacy and toxicity using small fish, the development of disease models, and the understanding of pharmacological actions based on these approaches. The program will feature keynote lectures by distinguished international speakers, educational and special lectures, oral and poster presentations, an Outstanding Presentation Award for young researchers, and a networking reception to foster among participants (with Utsunomiya gyoza vendors under consideration). We are committed to structuring presentations in a manner that facilitates clear and accessible discussion, including for those outside the immediate field of specialization.
