Zhu Wen Elopes with the Ghost premiered in 2006 at the National Theater’s Experimental Theater, and received the Taishin Arts Award in 2007. This performance combines the stylized movements from traditional Liyuan Opera with the atmosphere of Japanese Butoh. Director Tomoe Shizune uses the silence and vast stillness of butoh as the setting of a Liyuan Opera tale of love between human and ghost, imagining the relationship as between solid and empty, real and unreal. This piece successfully merges and contrasts the performance style of Nanguan music with the physical aesthetics of butoh, and affirms the close relationship between body and space. The Taishin Award committee praised the work’s masterful, minimalist fusion of traditional Nanguan music, Liyuan Opera texts, and Japanese Noh and Butoh aesthetics. The result is a radically innovative work of theater, representing over ten years of cultivation and experimentation from Gang-a Tsui Theater.
Fourteen years since the original performance, Gang-a Tsui Theater hopes this re-staging will serve to showcase the vitality of traditional performance art, and take the role of intercultural communication. This performance marks the beginning of a new chapter for the theater company, whose members will continue developing and innovating in Liyuan Opera performances for years to come.
