Kantha Kotha (কাঁথা-কথা) project focuses on the community of female Katha artisans from North Bengal. The project involves around 8 ghor (household) kantha artisans who stitches the traditional sewing using their traditional blocks blended with their imaginations during the non harvesting time.
Both men and women in the community engage in agricultural activities, cultivating crops such as paddy, corn, and vegetables. In their leisure time, the women devote themselves to the intricate art of kantha stitching. The “Matir Bari” or clay houses in this locality boast a unique feature and typically a clay 'uthan,' where women come together to share their stories of hardship while stitching these piece of arts.
The project focuses to empower these women, preserve the unique bengal stitches and find more scopes to incorporate these unique work in modern urban fashion.
