We are one of the two CanSat-teams of the Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet in The Hague in the Netherlands.
Our team consists of:
Ruben Lommers - Software Developer & Team captain
Hey there. I am Ruben Lommers, 17 years old and attending pre-university education at Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet, in year five. The reason I joined the team was because of interest in space and programming, and this project would incorporate both. Since it will also count as a PWS for school, it means that I also have very little quantative time loss. I am team captain on paper, but most of the time tasks are assigned in a group form, instead of one person calling the shots. My main occupation is CanSat logic. When Jian Ming has found out how to make a sensor measure something, I make that measurement integrate in the logic of the code. To give an example, I wrote the bulk of the logic that dictates when the arms will extend out of the CanSat.
Jian Ming Liu - Software Developer & Data Analyst
My name is Jian Ming Liu. I am 16 years old an currently in the fifth year of pre-university education at Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet. In the team, I am tasked with writing the code and the processing and analysing of the data received on the Launch Day. I have therefore written a large segment of the code that request data from the sensors. Together with Ruben, this has been converted to a working entirety. I have worked closely with Destin, who did the soldering work to test the sensors and our distinctive arm-deployment-system. Furthermore, I have worked together with Figo, who built the antenna, to test the antenna multiple times.
Destin Beiten - Hardware Developer
Hello, my name is Destin Beiten, I am 16 years old and I am in my fifth year at the Christian Lyceum Zandvliet. At first I was hesitant about participating in the CanSat competition. I was busy with school and thought it would take up too much time. When my physics teacher invited me to a meeting, I discovered that my friends (who are now also my team members) wanted to participate in the project. This finally convinced me, and that is how I joined the team.
I was not interested in programming and finding sponsors, so it was decided that I would take on the role of hardware developer (simply put, the one who makes the physical CanSat). This means that I did almost all the soldering. In addition, I also came up with the physical design concept of the CanSat. Because I was not very good with 3D design software, Chi Fung made a 3D design with my design as basis. Another part of my tasks was testing hardware. Together with Jian Ming I tested the sensors many times, and together with Figo I tested the antenna. We repeated this over and over again, to see if our changes had broken anything.
Through my participation in CanSat I gained a lot of new knowledge and skills. For example, I learned how to solder, make a design and work together in a team. But the most important thing about the entire CanSat project for me was that I had a lot of fun.
Alessandro Morello - Finance & Outreach
My name is Alessandro Morello, I am 17 years old and in my fifth year of pre-university education at Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet. My original position in this CanSat project was Finance and Outreach management, but currently I mostly assist my other team members with their tasks if possible. I joined the CanSat competition because it was a very interesting concept to me: making your own satellite. When you hear the word “satellite” you think of this big hunk of metal with a satellite dish, but this project is like that same satellite, but the size of a can. Doesn’t that sound interesting? And that is why I joined the competition, alongside my good friends.
Figo Kapteijns - Hardware Developer
Hello, I am Figo Kapteijns. I am 16 years old and I am also in the fifth year of pre-university education at Zandvliet. Space is something that has always interested me and combining that with building something is what made me enthusiastic about CanSat. My job as Hardware Developer is, simply put, building the CanSat. I mainly focused on building the antenna and that was a bit more difficult than I thought. I had some problems with the antenna and sometimes this was frustrating, but challenging yourself is what makes CanSat fun and when it finally works out, it feels extra good. Along with that, I occasionally helped Destin with soldering.
Chi Fung Fan - Finance & Outreach
Hi, my name is Chi Fung Fan, and I am 17 years old. I am currently studying my fifth year of pre-university at Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet. The reason I joined the CanSat competition is because I’m unsure about my future, and I wanted to explore whether technology and engineering might be the right fit for me. So far, it has been an interesting and fun experience. I’m learning a lot about teamwork and problem-solving. My position in the team is finance and outreach management, but I also made the 3d model of our CanSat.
