When I began working as a teacher it was very overwhelming. Like everyone tells you things get hectic very quickly. I was so focused on making my classroom the best I could I didn’t really focus on making myself better for the classroom. After a few years my certification needed to be reviewed. I realized I needed to get my master's degree. At the time the thought of higher education beyond my bachelor's degree had never cross my mind, it was not even something I thought I would ever have. When I was applying for Michigan State University’s Master of Arts in Educational Technology program they asked me to explain my goals for the program. I had to think about it because I had never planned on being able to get a masters degree. I ended up talking about my dad. How he had always strived for me to be better. I then thought about my family. I have two sons myself and I knew that me achieving more, becoming more, meant that they would have better chances and more opportunities in life because of that. My goals at the beginning were to gain a degree higher than anyone in my family has ever achieved and by doing that I would set my own family up for success.
Today my goals are still very much the same, except now I have more drive and more passion in what I am doing. Before I was lost, I had no idea what I was doing and stepping into. Once I began my first class in the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program and Michigan State University though, I was amazed, enamored, and energized for what I could become. I had learned a decent amount in my undergraduate program but a lot of it felt like it was something I already knew, I was prepared for.
Here at Michigan State it felt for the first time I was being challenged to do something great in education, to take things farther than I have before, and to make my student's lives better. That became a new goal of mine. I can give many of my students the same opportunities I got when I became the first person in my family to graduate college. I can give them this same passion that this master's program has given me for their own education. My goal is to make others lives as fulfilling as they can be by showing them what they could learn. I know it seems like something we all want to do. I know that even before this program I wanted to do this for my students. The difference is now I truly feel like I am on the right path to help them. Thanks to this program I have many people, ideas, and platforms that I can use when I need help. This program has made me a better learned, educator, mentor, and person. I now absolutely feel like I have the tools I need to become better for myself, better for my family, and better for my students.
