What is She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms about?
Written by Qui Nyugen, She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms tells the story of high school senior Agnes Evans, who uses the popular role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons, to connect with her deceased younger sister Tilly and her old group of friends.
How did we present the show?
Our production was presented online using 4 different platforms: Zoom, Open Broadcast Software (OBS), YouTube and Discord. While the actors were on Zoom during the run, our OBS programmer, who was also an actor in the show, used the OBS software to edit the Zoom screens and use additional backgrounds and effects to bring the play's D&D world to life. From OBS, the show was live streamed on YouTube. The OBS programmer and I communicated with each other through a voice channel on Discord.
How was our production unique?
We did not have designers originally assigned at the beginning. Throughout the rehearsal process, our company members were all active and involved with the design and technical aspects of the show, from props and costumes to the virtual artwork. For props and costumes, the company was strongly encouraged to use things that they already own. However, we were still able to provide costume and props pieces if needed. Since our production was virtual, we were able to incorporate pre-recorded segments using the popular video app TikTok.
Our production also collaborated with Philadelphia's Die-Cast, a company dedicated to creating immersive work that is tailored to specific non-traditional venues.
