The Sign of the Four (1890), also called The Sign of Four, is the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle wrote four novels and 56 stories starring the fictional detective.

The story is set in 1888. The Sign of the Four has a complex plot involving service in East India Company, India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts(“the Four” of the title) and two corrupt prison guards. It presents the detective’s drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in A Study in Scarlet. It also introduces Doctor Watson’s future wife, Mary Morstan.

We start from the beginning …… that is the time period of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s messages. What biochemistry signals appear …via the arteries messenger ….. the medical doctor and his arteries named —> ARTHUR.

In year 2012, using basic chemistry, physics, and bio-chemistry books with the periodic atomic table element IRON and bio-chemistry descriptions of hemoglobin with IRON ….. we can see the possible connections. That information was not really available in year 1890 –> thus we must appreciate Nature’s attempts to send out a signal VIA physician /author DOYLE in that time period.

Nature makes another attempt at SIGNAL recognition in year 1989 …for readers of Sherlock Holmes ….. who apparently are asleep OR are intellectually lazy OR do not respect the serious Sherlock Holmes mission ….. on EARTH and in literature.
