The Controls & Diagnostics Lab (CDL) was founded by Dr. Yongsoon Yoon in August 2020 at Oakland University. Our research focuses on controls and diagnostics with broad mechatronic applications, including automotive powertrain, autonomous vehicles, fluid power systems, and energy.

Sep.3-5, 2025: Dr. Yoon attended the NSF DCSD (Dynamics, Control, System Diagnostics) PI meeting at the NSF Headquarter in Alexandria VA, and gave a poster presentation about our work on hydraulic system diagnostic.
Aug. 27, 2025: Our group visited the Evolution in Auburn Hills, and toured their engineering facilities. Thank you Tom Rinke for accommodating our visit. Look forward to potential collaboration in the near future.

Dec. 11, 2024: The PI sponsored and advised the Fall 2024 Senior Design Team (6 ME students and 5 EE students) on the project entitled "Control System Design for an Electrified Mobile Construction Machine". The project focused on developing a novel electrified excavator using pump-valve composite control systems. The team delivered excellent work!
Nov. 24, 2024: Amir's paper, entitled "Optimal Energy Management of Parallel Electric-Hydraulic Hybrid Vehicles based on Dynamic Programming and Recurrent Neural Network", has been accepted for an oral presentation at SAE WCX 2025. Excellent work! Congratulations, Amir!
Oct. 28, 2024: Amir and Weichen gave presentations at the MECC in Chicago on their dissertation projects. Well done!
Sep. 6, 2024: The SECS faculty team (PI: Dr. Yang, Co-PIs: Dr. Chen, Dr. Wang, Dr. Yoon, Dr. DelVescovo, Dr. Aloi, Dr. Alawnhe, Dr. Toulabi) has been awarded a $3 million grant from the NIST for the development of the "Next-Gen Electrification Testing and Standards Facility: from Materials to Vehicles". Dr. Yoon and his group will develop a full-scale electric-hydraulic hybrid powertrain and a hydrostatic dynamometer to advance research in controls and diagnostics of electrified heavy-duty vehicles.
July 6, 2024: We had a group picnic at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills. The weather was nice, and we had a comfortable and enjoyable time. We shared Korean, Iranian and Chinese foods (yes, we are an INTERNATIONAL group), and the kids had a great time playing at the playground.
June 29, 2024: All MECC papers from our group have been accepted for inclusion in MECC2024 (one invited session paper and one contributed paper). Our group will attend MECC on October 27-30, 2024 in Chicago. Congratulations Amir, Weichen, and Neha!
