Using the topic “Gordon Ramsay Beef Wellington” as a starting point, we can identify adjacent topics that are all part of a larger theme and categorically belong together. For instance, adjacent topics to “Gordon Ramsay Beef Wellington” could be other Ramsay dishes, like “Gordon Ramsay Yorkshire Pudding” and “Gordon Ramsay Salmon.” If MasterClass establishes topical authority for these tangential topics, eventually they will be able to rank for “Gordon Ramsay Dishes,” the much more popular topic that these tangential topics all belong to.

When the EM performs the groundwork and maintenance required, team health no longer looks like the spikey, declining, and low-leverage curves. Instead, with some limited upfront effort, the EM can set the right climate for organic team health to take off on its own in a predictable, sustainable, and exponential way.

Engineering is unique, though, in that ICs have many tracks they can explore. Additionally, exploring these tracks happens at varying paces for each IC, which means that an end goal isn’t a “set it and forget it” situation. Rather, these development plans need to be approached as inherently iterative. This means that as plans are explored, they’re also continuously revised to match evolving interests. If they aren’t, both the IC and the EM will be developing and coaching against an end goal that is outdated.

It can be helpful to think about IC development as a continuous upward spiral. Rather than looking at it as a linear track with a destination at the end, and checkpoints along the way, EMs and ICs should build some anticipated flexibility into the process.

Let’s think about some examples of this. If an IC demonstrates spikes centered around the output quality quadrant, they may be well-suited to explore a Staff Engineer role.
