So you see, there's this thing called time. In the beginning, there was the GAC WW3 server.
The General Air Combat (GAC) aircraft are low-polygon count aircraft balanced for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. The Japanese YSFlight Community 2ch members hosted a custom World War 3 (WW3) server with special scripts and addons to compliment the East vs West combat theme of the GAC packs. As part of the 2ch and GAC releases, custom maps designed for combat, the package formed a good balance of realism and classic YSFlight-style combat.
The original WW3 server is no longer operational but the GAC aircraft are still available for download and enjoyment of the YSFlight community. For a while YSFHQ hosted a WW3 style server with the aircraft and maps, but they didn't have all the scripts from the original WW3 server.
In September 2020, YSFHQ members CrazyPilot and Waspe414 organized and hosted the first Red vs Blue Event. The goal for this event was to spark YSFlight Combat and was so successful that the YSFHQ community wanted to participate in more Red vs Blue events. After hosting each event, the planning team implements changes to provide a better experience for all participants in the next event.
All Red vs Blue events have a server-wide g-limit that is specific to the gameplay style (slightly lower for WW2 and slightly higher for WW3). Exceeding the g-limit starts to damage a player's aircraft and can ultimately cause enough damage to kill the airplane. This has been implemented to keep some of the spirit of the original WW3 server which had many other custom scripts to enhance realism. Unfortunately these scripts have been lost to time, but thanks to other efforts in performance enhancement other realism increases have been obtained.
As more events are held, different game modes or themes are added to the rotation.
The first event was held using unmodified GAC aircraft and maps and featured a wide variety of airplanes from each side for players to fly.
In an attempt to even out the differences between Red and Blue teams, 7 different classes were developed so that aircraft of the same class on both sides would have the same performance. This improved game play as it wasn't so much about which specific aircraft were available to Red and Blue teams, but the skills of the pilots to take advantage of the different classes.
A custom map, brand-new low polygon ground objects and aircraft paints were developed to simulate the air battle over the English Channel in World War 2
