Traveling to Athens

For those of you invited to travel to Athens, DO NOT purchase a ticket at this point. We will be in contact about when and how to do this.

You will fly into the Athens International Airport by the afternoon of Saturday 27 September, as there will be a welcome reception that evening.  Depending on distance traveled and flight availability, students may arrive on Friday 26 September.

Departure from Athens is planned for Sunday 3 October.

Lodging

You will housed in dorms on the campus of Deree - The American College of Greece. An address will provided closer to your travel time.

Transportation to/from the Airport

You are responsible for getting from the airport to the hotel. Once we have all the itineraries, we will share that information with you. If a few of you are arriving at about the same time, you may want to travel together to campus.

Travel by Taxi - You can get a taxi at the Taxi Terminal (Exit 3 of the Arrivals level), which is right outside the Airport's Arrivals Terminal. If you arrive during the day, you will see a long line of taxis. The cost will be 35€ during the day and 49€ from midnight to 5:00 am. Few taxis take credit or debit cards. Most expect to be paid in cash. The trip takes about 20 minutes. You can book a taxi by contacting the taxi Union Association at syndikatotaxi@gmail.com.

If you are traveling as a group, reach agreement on which of you will arrange for the taxi and then split the cost. Check to see how many riders your taxi can handle.

The address to give the driver is Athanasiou Diakou 28, 15342 Agia Paraskevi.

Travel by Express Bus and Metro - Bus (x95) will take you to the Agia Paraskevi main square and from there you can take the Α5, 303, 304, 305, 308, or 316 bus to the Demetra bus stop, or you could take the metro from the airport to the Nomismatokopio station and from there take a bus Α5, 303, 304, 305, 308, or 316 to the Demetra bus stop. Each metro station is clearly named and you can follow your progress on this metro map. There is also a clearly marked metro map above the doors of each train car. The travel time will be about 40-60 minutes. From there you probably want to take a taxi to the dorm (it would be a bit of a trek on foot).

Meeting at the Airport

If you are traveling as a group to the hotel, you will need a place to meet up at the airport. Visit the Athens airport website . There you will find a terminal map (see “Map” at the very top of the page between “Mobile Apps” and “Call Center” - this will download a difficult to read PDF). You might pick a restaurant or café to meet. On the home page, click on “Shopping Centre” and “Restaurants & Cafes”. Be sure to pick a place accessible from Arrivals.

Dress

You should bring comfortable clothing for the work sessions and business attire to attend the Forum sessions. See the Photos link to see how students attending last year's Forum dressed. Bring a bathing suit; there will be a swimming outing if the weather is agreeable.

Money

Greece uses euros. Most places (not taxis) will take a credit/debit card. Be warned that converting money at the airport is expensive. They will charge you something like 6€ just to do the conversion and you won’t get a favorable conversion rate. You cannot exchange currency in a bank unless you have an account. There are currency exchange places in the center of Athens, but that is a bit of a trek from where we will be.

The simplest solution is to use an ATM and there are several on campus.

Put a travel advisory on your credit card so you can use it in Greece!
