Gerasimos Velas
I am an undergraduate student at The American College of Greece (Deree), currently majoring in Management Information Systems. I am from Athens, Greece, and my academic and professional interests lie at the intersection of technology, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship.
Throughout my studies, I have been actively involved in initiatives that promote democratic values, digital literacy, and youth participation in public life. As a student at Deree, I have contributed to projects aimed at strengthening active citizenship and public dialogue, particularly among young people navigating a fast-changing digital landscape.
Beyond my academic work, I am also engaged in the startup ecosystem. I co-founded a student-led venture through a university entrepreneurship competition and am currently working at the ACG Research Center to develop it into a sustainable business. This experience has deepened my appreciation for the role of innovation and responsible leadership in shaping more resilient, democratic societies.
Participating in the Athens Democracy Forum is a unique opportunity to engage with global thinkers, explore complex issues of governance, and contribute to conversations that will shape the future of democracy — both in Greece and beyond.
Denisse Ramos
Hi! I’m Denisse Ramos, born and raised in Cusco, Peru, and currently a student at Hope College in the United States. I’m double majoring in Business and Computer Science, with a focus on creating impact at the intersection of innovation, equity, and community empowerment.
Growing up in a region marked by inequality and cultural marginalization, I became interested in how we can reimagine systems to be more inclusive and just. In 2023, I founded Kusi Learning, a nonprofit organization that provides free English education to children and teens from rural and indigenous communities across Latin America. Our mission also centers on uplifting Andean culture and native languages like Quechua—transforming what has long been a source of exclusion into one of pride and empowerment. To date, we've reached over 150 students and built a community of more than 100 volunteer tutors.
At Hope, I serve on the executive board of the International Relations Club and actively support cultural visibility and inclusion on campus. I’ve also represented my school in international spaces like the Stanford ASES Summit, where I received an Honorable Mention for a socially driven pitch, and now, at the Athens Democracy Forum.
I’m thrilled to bring a Global South, youth-led perspective to the Forum—one rooted in education, equity, and cultural pride. I look forward to learning from and alongside others who believe in the power of democracy to drive meaningful change.
Beata Karwaczka
Hi everybody! My name is Beata, and I am from Schererville, IN, U.S.A. I am pursuing my undergraduate studies at Albion College in Michigan. I am a rising senior working on a dual degree in Political Science and Psychology with a focus on Public Policy. I chose to focus on people in our world and how democracy can grow, and I hope to learn more about this from this amazing opportunity.
My interest in the forum goes to learning different perspectives and understanding democracy on a global scale. At the start of my undergraduate career, I began to immerse myself in different projects, such as working for a Food Bank, creating a thesis addressing welfare policies, joining campus organizations to discuss current/key issues, and presenting undergraduate research on Drone Warfare. My interests are what drive me to learn everything I can and to start now to make a change. Currently, I am working on instituting an environmental project on my campus that will benefit the town and its students.
My academic career has prepared me for working in the field of Public Policy, and this opportunity can allow me to focus more on international policy rather than just domestic policy. I look forward to meeting everyone and getting to know them.
