Transportation is a vital aspect of our modern lives, but it also contributes significantly to carbon emissions. The burning of fossil fuels in vehicles, such as cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships, releases greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) and other pollutants into the atmosphere, contributing to the climate crisis.
CO2 Emissions Measured in Gt (Gigatonnes) Across Different Transportation Modes 2000-2030
The line chart to the left (Fig. 7) illustrates the growing trend in vehicle emissions. As time increases, CO2 emissions increase, and if this continues, humanity will reach a point of no return where we will not be able to reverse climate change.
As shown, passenger vehicles account for the greatest rate of increase and the greatest mode of transportation that emits CO2. Due to USA's heavy reliance on passenger vehicles to go places, it is especially imperative that we pay attention to how often and how much we use our cars.
Note* A decrease in the year 2020 is due to the COVID-19 Pandemic restricting activity.
