The teams will meet 3 times a week in class to work on their project for 45 minutes. After 2 months of working, they will present their completed work.
Introduce & Learn
The first lesson will focus on introducing new vocabulary words and understanding the project framework. Key vocabulary words have been highlighted through the STEAM explanations. The class will review authentic material and discuss ways that they practice being eco-friendly.
Teams & Brainstorm
During these lessons, the students will break into teams of 2-3 and they will begin to brainstorm ideas for their eco-city within each component. The students will use brain storm activites to think outside of the box. By the 3rd lesson, they should have a name for their eco city and a project goal.
Introduce Science
In these lessons, the students will be introduced to the problem and they will brainstorm ideas and ways of solving it. The students will be given a brief lesson on how to be a good digital citizen so that they may use tablets to help research ideas. By the end of lesson 7 students will have: A headline, a few sentences explaining their solution, and a visual aid of some sort.
Introduce Art
During these lessons, the students will use ideas from their science and brainstorm more ideas of different wasted materials that can be re-used. Students will then create a visual advertisment for the city's Up-Cycled Market. By the end of lesson 11 the students will have: A headline for their ad, a few sentences explaining the market, and a visual aid/mock up of their market.
Introduce Engineering
Within these lessons, students will brainstorm ways of using clean energy and come up with their own creative idea to do so. Students will have time to research, brainstorm, and create their own model using clay. By the end of lesson 15 students will have: A model using clay, a headline, and a few sentences explaining their concept.
Introduce Math
During these lessons, the students will be introduced to the problem and given the measurements of their city. The students will then brainstorm a layout for their city using the measurement guidelines. The students will show the different areas of the parks and gardens and what sizes they are. Within the parks and gardens, the students will explain what will be included and give sizing measurements. By the end of lesson 19 the students will have completed: a headline, a city map with measurements, a map of a park and garden with measurements, a few sentences of what's been included and why.
Assess Completed Newspaper
During this lesson, the students will assess their completed newspaper and visual aids. The students will have time to observe other team's newspapers and ask questions. The students will organize their sources and include any information that is missing from a section.
Introduce Script
During these lessons the students will begin writing their script with teacher assistance. The students will assign roles (interviewer and city planner). The students will practice and try to memorize. Students are encouraged to use props and costumes when presenting. The students will be given presenting tips.
Presentations & Evaluations
Students will present their scripts and showcase their newspaper while being recorded. When each team has finished, students will complete their evaluations and submit their videos.
