Before being assigned to the laboratory, you have probably encountered many textbooks. In the lab, you will come to realize that every single word in those textbooks is the result of immense effort by those who came before us. You will develop a respect for every single word in the textbooks that you have never felt before. Perhaps you may even feel the urge to question or challenge them, to verify and test what is written. At that moment, you will become a part of the flow of knowledge that only humans can contribute to, bridging generations.

Research may involve being handed a topic that you barely understand, being asked to read a paper in completely unfamiliar English, or being challenged with a “try it yourself” sort of task. It may mean enduring days when repeated failures produce no usable data, and struggling while coming up with various approaches and experiments. Yet it is precisely during such times that you are participating in the continuation of academic progress, connecting the achievements of one generation to the next—and I hope you never forget that.

I believe that the experience of research has the power to help people grow. Through research, I encourage you to learn actively and grow significantly.

◆研究室に配属されるまでに、いろんな教科書に触れてきたと思います。研究室では、教科書に記された一言一句が、先人の途方もない努力の結果であることを知るでしょう。教科書の一言一句に、これまで感じたことのない敬意をもつようになるでしょう。もしかしたら、反論や疑問を持ち、検証しようと思えるかもしれません。その時、君達は人間にしか成し得ない、学問の潮流の一滴となり、世代をつなぐことができるでしょう。 研究とは、なんだかよく分からないテーマを渡され、全く理解できない英語の論文を読めと言われ、「やってみてよ」と無茶ぶりされることかもしれません。そして、失敗つづきで使えるデータが出ない日々を耐え、あれこれ工夫し、格闘することかもしれません。ただ、こういった時間こそが、これまでの学問の発展を、世代から世代へとつないでいるということを知り、そして忘れないで欲しいと思います。

私は、研究という経験が人間を成長させる力を信じています。ぜひ、研究を通じて、自ら学び、大きく成長してください。
