How to Join the Posse

Joining the Yolo County Sheriff's Posse is an excellent way to serve your community, improve your horsemanship skills and share experiences with people who have the same interest in horses. Being a Posse member is a rewarding and fun-filled experience. You do not need to own a horse to participate. We're looking for good people, who are knowledgeable about horses, riding, and who have the time to volunteer and go through background checks and training. This is a commitment that requires attending monthly meetings and monthly trainings. Thank you for your interest!

Requirements:

We encourage anyone who is interested in joining to speak with any of our members about the organization and apply. The basic requirements of membership are as follows:

1. Be eighteen years of age or older.

2. Submit an application.

3. Pass an investigation pertaining to prior criminal history.

4. Meet the requirements of the Yolo County Sheriff's Posse

Horse ownership is encourage, but not an absolute requirement. If the applicant plans to use his/her horse on duty, the animal and tack must be inspected and approved prior to use.

Once the application is processed and approved, the new member will be invited to attend an oral interview and complete a criminal background check. Applicants are encouraged to attend meetings, trainings and activities in a non-uniform capacity.

An applicant who is approved by the Board of Directors and successfully completes their criminal background check will become an official member of the Posse.

What to Expect

Meetings-

Monthly meetings with the Posse are every first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm. Regular meetings are held to keep up with organizational business, training, information interchange, upcoming events, and the general membership.

Trainings-

Training takes place the third Sunday of every month (some exceptions on exact date of training due to Holidays). Training is in basic law enforcement concepts and other related duties which include, but are not limited to:

Equestrian Training: Consists of groundwork concepts... lunging, lateral work, side passing, communication skills with both the rider and the horse, turn on the forehand and haunches, and much more. Saddle work include all of the above and more.

Search & Rescue (SAR): Search for and aid people who are lost or in imminent danger. This includes mountain rescue and ground search techniques.

CPR/First-Aid: All members are certified once a year through the Sheriff's Department. This is a 4 hour class that is very thorough on how to handle medical emergencies that can happen.

Events-

Events come up throughout the year within Yolo County and at outlaying areas. We attend these events mounted and non-mounted. We participate in parades to promote goodwill between the local surrounding cities.

The Yolo County Sheriff's Posse enjoys a unique relationship with the community. As part of our commitment to being an active volunteer group, we dedicate ourselves to bring together the community as one. As a member of the Sheriff's Posse, there are some events you would be expected to participate in, like parades that are in place of a monthly training and our annual crab feed fundraiser.
