About the Posse

History of the Posse

In 2002, marked the return of a Sheriff's Office legacy: The Yolo County Sheriff's Posse. The original Sheriff's Posse, which was a component of the Reserve Program, disbanded in the early 1990's. The current Posse was a vision of the previous Sheriff, Ed Prieto, which culminated from conversations with John Weber, a member of the community. Sheriff Tom Lopez continues to recognize the value of a mounted unit for the use in a variety of assignments.

The Yolo County Sheriff's Posse has won a variety of prizes and awards, such as first place in the large horse division group at the 2003 Dixon May Fair and first place in the horse division in the 2018 Winter's Youth Day Parade. The Posse always performs in the Woodland Christmas Parade each year and has accumulated many ribbons.

While the Posse is initially used for community service details, such as participation in parades and shows, the Posse also assists with the Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue unit. The Sheriff's Posse trains throughout the year to be ready to assist the Search and Rescue unit in looking for lost or stranded persons in remote areas of the county and to assist the deputies in patrolling events such as the county fair.

The Yolo County Sheriff's Posse is always looking for new members to join our Posse! Please see additional information on how to join our Posse under the "Join Us!" page.

Events

Throughout the year, you will see the Yolo County Sheriff's Posse at public events interacting with the community and assisting Law Enforcement in various activities.

The mounted posse is a non-profit group of volunteers who dedicate their time to their communities and the Sheriff's Department. The Posse uses their personal horses for Department duties such as patrol, search and rescue, public relations, parade detail and charity events.

The Sheriff's Posse can be seen at a variety of events throughout the year. The Posse is proud to represent the Sheriff's Department in the Woodland Holiday Parade every December and the Winter's Youth Day Parade every April.
