The why behind my teaching

A summer job opened my eyes to the possibility of training and development and HR, and my life was never the same. I knew that I was good at school, and here was a field that allowed me to keep learning while helping others to grow through teaching. I pursued a Master's in Human Resource Development, and when the opportunity to teach came, I jumped at it. I knew I wanted to share knowledge and positively impact others. My love for HR, passion for teaching, and my zest for learning and sharing with others have shaped my teaching philosophy.

My teaching philosophy focuses on bridging the gap between theory and practice. I believe that theoretical understanding is key to understanding the problems faced in the organisation and providing viable solutions. There is a persistent conversation in Jamaica about the gap between university education and the realities in the workplace, and my goal is to play my part in addressing it. Students in my classes engage with real issues that are actively unfolding within the Jamaican organisations.

Theory doesn't have to be boring. I have realised in my own personal journey that if you take the time to understand 'the why' and apply it in a practical way, it makes a real difference. I want students to understand their discipline deeply enough which will help them to navigate emerging tools like generative AI, using it critically, rather than as a substitute for their own thinking. Knowledge from academia isn't just for academics but a tool that equips both people and organisations to be successful. I bring an evidence-based, experiential approach to learning that keeps content relevant, grounded, and real to my learners.
