My name is Yi Hu. I am a certified Chinese teacher with a master's degree in Educational Technology. A Google Certified Educator.
From teaching English as the second language in Beijing, China to becoming a Mandarin teacher in America, I believe being a teacher involves more than simply being able to convey knowledge to students.
I have rich experience in teaching Mandarin/English as the second language, 4 years of experience as an English teacher at the largest private educational institute in China; and 6 years of Mandarin teaching in US.
The accomplishment that I'm most proud of in my teaching career is that some low-performance students made significant progress and became advanced students under my differentiated instruction and active encouragement.
This year is my 5th year teaching at St. Ann's. Before coming here, I was teaching in Friends Select School in Philadelphia.
I was born in Yunnan, China and I moved to America in 2014.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe all students are individual and everyone learns in their own unique way and their own pace. I use multiple methods of teaching to reach students(linguistic, visual, auditory, kinesthetic) so that no one is left behind.
I believe we are all teachers and learners. I learn from students as much as they learn from me. One way I incorporate this philosophy into my classes is to get feedback from students. For example, I will let students fill out a mid-course evaluation of the class, in which they reflect on the course goals and my teaching method and provide feedback on whether or not the course is helping them meet these goals so far. Students will provide useful information for me on what is working in class, and what I can improve upon. I believe we never stop learning, and I want my students to know we can learn from each other.
I also believe that every student can learn and succeed in different ways. So I will try to create a classroom culture of high expectations for all students. I will always praise the good things about my students, even it’s a slight improvement. I will always encourage them that they can do it if they try, but I won’t accept excuses for not having their homework done. I have faith in every student.
