Food and drink
You will be provided with breakfast at your accommodation, as well as a packed lunch at the conference on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. There will also be a buffet during the poster session. If the weather is nice, and you would like to eat your packed lunch outside, we would recommend going to the Royal Fort Gardens, Berkeley Square, or Brandon Hill (where you can climb Cabot Tower for some nice views).
For self-organised meals, Bristol has loads of great places to eat and drink. You can find a lot of the usual chains close to the university, as well as a supermarket, however there are many more interesting places to try. The following are a few places we recommend, with most catering to a variety of dietary requirements:
Eat a Pitta
Sotiris Greek Bakery
Brisnoodles (cash only)
Wok to Walk
Moltobuono!
Pizza on the Park (2 for 1 on mains, Monday-Friday 12:00-16:00)
Jason Donervan (a Bristol student classic)
Pieminister
Nutmeg Street Kitchen (the sides are good value for money, you can order them instead of a main)
Pastan
Cargo (a collection of shops and food places in converted shipping containers, with several fantastic places to eat)
Koocha Mezze Bar
The Harbourside Street Food Market (Wednesday & Thursday 12.00–14.30, Saturday & Sunday 11.00–16.00)
The UK loves its pubs, and Bristol is no exception. They will all serve non-alcoholic drinks, as well as beers and ciders. Many will also serve food, although not all. These are some of our recommendations:
King's Street (a street with a large collection of pubs, such as the Royal Navy Volunteer, the Old Duke, the Beer Emporium, and the Apple)
The Open Arms
Highbury Vaults
Brewhouse & Kitchen
The Shakespeare Tavern
The Hatchet Inn
The Eldon House
The Hope & Anchor
Grain Barge (pub on a boat)
Bag of Nails (cat pub)
If you are very into your beer, there are also a variety of local breweries with open tap rooms. A list can be found here.
Things to do
Bristol is a great city to explore, and there is always something on. Here are a few suggestions of things you could do:
Clifton Suspension Bridge (an iconic symbol of Bristol, you could also visit the nearby observatory, Giant's Cave, and rock slide)
Ashton Court, Leigh Woods, the Downs (large green spaces for walking)
SS Great Britain (a historic boat)
St Nicholas Market (more commonly known as St Nick's)
Banksy artworks (legendary graffiti artist from Bristol, you can find his artwork dotted around the city)
M Shed (free museum focusing on the history of Bristol)
Bristol Museum & Art Gallery (free museum right next to the university)
Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition (at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, tickets for the exhibition can be purchased here)
Cabot Tower (a tower that you can climb for free, for views of the city)
Bristol Cathedral and St Mary Redcliffe (two historic churches)
Football match: Bristol City vs Blackburn Rovers, 19:45 on Wednesday 10th April (tickets can be purchase here)
Cycling (you could hire a bike, take a cycle tour with Cycle the City, or perhaps explore the Bristol and Bath Railway Path)
There are also all of the usual activities that you might expect to find: cinemas, theatres, bowling, mini-golf, escape rooms, axe throwing...

Travel advice
For those travelling by train: Unless you are staying far away from the centre of Bristol, you will want to aim for Bristol Temple Meads rather than Bristol Parkway. The National Rail website is the best place to plan your journey and find ticket prices.
For those travelling by coach/bus: The major hubs for coaches are the Bristol Bus & Coach Station (if using National Express), and the nearby Bond Street stop (if using Megabus/FlixBus). Both locations are no more than a 20 minute walk from YHA Bristol, and also give easy access to local bus services.
For those travelling by plane: The closest international airport to Bristol is (unsurprisingly) Bristol Airport. The best way for most people to get to and from there is the Bristol Airport Flyer bus service, which runs regularly, and stops very close to YHA Bristol. Tickets can be purchased in advance, or as you board.
It is worth bearing in mind that Bristol Airport is not huge, and so depending on where you're travelling from, it may make more sense (in terms of time and/or cost) to go to a different airport, and then get a train to Bristol Temple Meads. For example, you may want to consider London Heathrow, or Birmingham International.
