PROJECT: Purple Bistro Mobile App ROLE: UI/UX Designer DURATION: 3 months
Overview
Developed as a personal project, the Purple Bistro mobile application aims to address the needs of busy individuals in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria, who seek a convenient and efficient way to order food from the modern fusion restaurant. To evaluate the project's effectiveness, consider the lens of user-friendliness, accessibility, and the ability to facilitate seamless food ordering.
User Research
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to cook meals.
This user group confirmed initial assumptions about the customers, but research also revealed that time was not the only factor limiting users from cooking at home. Other user problems included obligations, interests, or challenges that make it difficult to get groceries for cooking or go to restaurants in-person.
Pain Points
Users have identified key areas for improvement:
Streamline phone number addition.
Enhance checkout process clarity.
Optimize menu navigation for ease of use.
Refine app design for intuitiveness and clarity.
The next step in the design process was to create wireframes and mockups. Wireframes are low-fidelity sketches that show the layout of the app's screens. Mockups are more detailed and show the actual appearance of the app. The team used wireframes and mockups to iterate on the design of the app and get feedback from users.
The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for ordering and checkout. It also met user needs for a pickup or delivery option as well as more interactivity.
After refining the mockups, we created an interactive prototype of the app for user testing. We observed users interacting with the prototype to identify and address any usability issues, ensuring a user-friendly and intuitive experience.
I implemented several key features to enhance accessibility for all users:
Enhanced accessibility for visually impaired users through alt text descriptions for images and intuitive iconography.
Rich meal imagery to enhance user understanding and engagement, catering to diverse preferences.
The app makes users feel like Purple Bistro really thinks about how to meet their needs.
One quote from peer feedback:
“This is superb. I could easily order my meal for delivery. I really like the designs.”
While designing the Purple Bistro app, I learned that making sure to incorporate feedback into the design is the best way to complete the project. It allows you view the design from another person’s perspective.
The Purple Bistro restaurant app is a valuable tool that enhances customer satisfaction and boosts the restaurant's online presence by addressing user pain points, implementing accessibility considerations, and facilitating seamless ordering, personalized meal recommendations, and a variety of payment options.
